How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Benin
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
ARCEP Benin lists three authorized national mobile operators in the market: MTN Bénin, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. Travellers can compare these names with the public coverage atlas and each operator’s own service pages, then choose the plan that fits the districts and road segments they will actually use.
MTN Bénin
MTN publishes a public 5G coverage page. It is useful as an operator service page, while ARCEP’s atlas remains the better public cross-check for route planning across multiple districts. [1] [3]
Check coverage ↗Moov Africa Benin
Ask Moov Africa Benin about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [5]
Official website ↗Celtiis
Celtiis is one of the authorized national mobile operators. Its public terms are useful for service details, while ARCEP’s atlas is the cleaner public reference for comparing where data is most convenient on your trip. [1] [4]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Benin
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Cotonou and the coast
- Porto-Novo and Abomey
- Ouidah and Grand-Popo
- Natitingou and the Pendjari gateway
Cotonou and the coast
Cotonou is the most practical base for arrivals, taxis, hotels and short stays on the coast. For day trips toward Ouidah or Grand-Popo, check coverage before you leave and keep your route saved in an offline map so you can move smoothly if signal changes between districts. [6] [7] [8] [12] [13] [14]
Porto-Novo and Abomey
These heritage stops work well as road-trip legs from the south. Data is most useful here for maps, messaging and coordination between visits, so downloading tickets, contacts and directions before departure makes the trip easier. [9] [10] [6] [13] [14]
Ouidah and Grand-Popo
For beach time, memorial sites and weekend travel, save your navigation and return transport details before you head out. That way your phone can guide the day without forcing you to depend on a live connection at every stop. [8] [12] [6] [13] [14]
Natitingou and the Pendjari gateway
Natitingou is the main gateway toward Pendjari National Park. Prepare offline maps, hotel contacts and key messages before leaving urban areas so mobile data is reserved for coordination rather than basic orientation on the road. [11] [6] [14]

Why travellers use an eSIM in Benin
Benin’s mobile market is straightforward to compare because ARCEP lists three authorized national operators: MTN Bénin, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. That gives travellers a clear shortlist, but the better choice still depends on where you will spend time. A stay in Cotonou is not the same as a road trip to Porto-Novo, Abomey, Ouidah or farther north to Natitingou and the Pendjari gateway. A public coverage atlas helps you compare areas in a practical way before you commit to a plan, while the operators’ own pages help you understand each network’s published service footprint.
For most visitors, the main value of mobile data is everyday usefulness: navigation, taxi coordination, restaurant searches, hotel messages and keeping the day moving without uncertainty. Benin Tourism highlights Cotonou as the country’s economic capital, Porto-Novo as the political capital, Abomey for the royal palaces, Ouidah for historic and cultural visits, Grand-Popo for the coast and Natitingou as the gateway to the north. That mix means your connectivity needs can shift during one trip, so a flexible data eSIM is usually more practical than assuming one simple pattern fits the whole country.
Useful apps and travel tools
Atlas Bénin ↗
ARCEP Benin’s public atlas for checking mobile coverage and service quality across the country. It is the most direct app for comparing areas before you choose a plan. [2] [1]
Google Maps ↗
Useful for live navigation, traffic-aware routing and finding places across Benin, especially in cities and along main roads. [13] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]
MAPS.ME: Offline maps GPS Nav ↗
A strong offline option when you want downloaded maps, turn-by-turn guidance and route help without relying on constant mobile data. [14] [6] [11] [12]
Before you buy
Check the public atlas before choosing a plan
Benin’s public ARCEP atlas is the most direct way to compare operators by area instead of by brand name alone. It helps separate city-centre use from road travel and from the exact districts where you will stay, which is much more practical than assuming one result applies everywhere. [1] [2]
Plan differently for southern and northern routes
Southern city trips usually revolve around maps, taxi coordination and hotel communication. A northern itinerary around Natitingou and the Pendjari gateway benefits more from offline maps and saved details, because the value of data is in helping you organize the trip rather than in expecting constant live use everywhere. [6] [11] [13] [14]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Benin
Which mobile networks should I compare before buying an eSIM for Benin?
The regulator lists three authorized national operators: MTN Bénin, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. For travellers, the best comparison is not just the brand name but the places you will actually use data: city stays in Cotonou, heritage trips to Porto-Novo or Abomey, beach time around Ouidah and Grand-Popo, or longer routes toward Natitingou and the Pendjari gateway. The ARCEP atlas is the most useful public place to make that comparison before you buy. [1] [2] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Is coverage the same in the south and the north?
No. South-coast city use and northern road travel have different needs, so it is better to plan by route than to assume one result applies everywhere. Cotonou is the easiest start for arrivals and transfers, while Porto-Novo, Abomey, Ouidah and Grand-Popo are often handled as separate day trips. Natitingou sits at the gateway to the north, so offline maps and saved details are especially helpful there. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [14]
What should I do if I’m driving from the coast to Pendjari?
Download offline maps before departure, save hotel and transport contacts, and keep important messages on your phone before you leave the city. Natitingou is the main gateway toward Pendjari National Park, so it makes sense to treat mobile data as a tool for coordination rather than as something you should rely on continuously on the road. [11] [14] [6]
Which app is most useful for checking Benin coverage?
Atlas Bénin is the most direct public app for checking coverage and service quality across the country. It is especially useful if you want to compare districts in Cotonou, the coast or inland routes before choosing an operator or an eSIM plan. [2] [1]
Are offline maps enough, or should I add a travel app too?
Offline maps are a strong baseline, but a live navigation app can make city travel easier. Google Maps helps with real-time routing, while MAPS.ME is a good fallback if you expect to move around with limited mobile data. For short city stays, offline maps may be enough; for intercity travel, combining an offline map with a live app is more comfortable. [13] [14] [6] [11]
