How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Bulgaria
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Bulgaria’s official market and regulatory sources identify three nationwide mobile network operators: A1 Bulgaria, Vivacom Bulgaria and Yettel Bulgaria.
A1 Bulgaria
A1 provides a public coverage map with selectable layers. Travellers can use it to estimate likely outdoor service by place or address, but it is still only an estimate and does not guarantee indoor reception. [1] [2] [4]
Check coverage ↗Vivacom Bulgaria
Vivacom publishes a public coverage map that helps compare expected outdoor service along a route or at a destination. Signal can still vary in buildings, underground spaces and complex terrain. [1] [2] [5]
Check coverage ↗Yettel Bulgaria
Yettel offers a public coverage map for checking expected outdoor service before you travel. It is useful for comparing locations, but it cannot replace an on-the-ground signal check. [1] [2] [6]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Bulgaria | — | 113.9 | 2026-01[3] |
| Vivacom Bulgaria | — | 96.4 | 2026-01[3] |
| Yettel Bulgaria | — | 89.6 | 2026-01[3] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

Coverage across Bulgaria
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Sofia
- Rila Monastery and the mountain road south of Sofia
- Balkan Mountains
- Pirin National Park
Sofia
In Sofia, mobile data is most useful for airport transfers, taxi apps, live navigation and transport tickets. Saving hotel details and offline map tiles before arrival gives you a reliable fallback if you enter dense streets or underground spaces. [8] [9] [7]
Rila Monastery and the mountain road south of Sofia
For a day trip or self-drive visit, download maps and route details in advance. Keep enough data for rerouting and messaging, because the road corridor matters more than the landmark itself. [7] [9]
Balkan Mountains
On hiking and scenic driving routes, plan for uneven reception and lean on offline maps, saved bookings and messaging apps. Coverage maps can help you compare likely outdoor service, but they do not replace a local check for the exact trail or pass. [7] [9] [3]
Pirin National Park
For mountain stays and trail days, treat mobile data as a planning tool rather than a constant. Download accommodation details, tickets and trail maps before leaving town, and compare operator maps to see how far service is expected to reach along access roads. [7] [9] [4] [5] [6]
Bulgaria · eSIM
Overview
Bulgaria has three national mobile network operators in the official market sources: A1 Bulgaria, Vivacom Bulgaria and Yettel Bulgaria. Each publishes a public coverage map that travellers can use to estimate likely outdoor service by place or address before the trip. That is useful for airport arrivals, city centres, long road transfers and mountain stays, but it is still a planning tool rather than a promise of the same result indoors or everywhere along a route.
For travellers, the practical difference is usually not a single best network everywhere, but how you prepare for the places you will actually visit. Sofia is the easiest place to rely on live navigation, transport apps and quick ticket checks. Rila Monastery, the Balkan Mountains and Pirin are better handled with offline maps, saved reservations and enough data for rerouting or messaging. Along the coast and in resort areas, mobile internet is most valuable for check-in, ride-hailing, restaurant searches and day-trip planning.
Useful apps and travel tools
MPASS ↗
Sofia’s public transport app for buying electronic travel documents and handling local transit use on the go. [8]
Google Maps ↗
Useful for turn-by-turn navigation and offline map downloads when reception is limited. [9]
Before you buy
Rail, airport and city transfer planning
For short stays, the first data-heavy moments are usually airport arrival, taxi booking and finding the hotel. Sofia’s transport tools and offline maps are the most practical support for those first hours. [8] [9]
City, coast and mountain trips need different habits
The same eSIM can work across the whole trip, but the way you use it should change. Live navigation is convenient in cities, while preloaded maps and saved reservations matter more on long drives and mountain days. [7] [9]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Bulgaria
Which mobile networks are available in Bulgaria?
Official market and regulatory sources point to three nationwide operators: A1 Bulgaria, Vivacom Bulgaria and Yettel Bulgaria. Their public coverage maps let you compare expected outdoor service before you choose a plan. That helps with trip planning, but it does not guarantee the same result inside hotels, underground stations or mountain valleys. [1] [2] [4] [5] [6]
Is Sofia a good place to depend on mobile data?
Yes, Sofia is the most convenient place to rely on live data for transport, navigation and ride-hailing. Still, it is wise to keep offline maps and saved addresses, because basement stations, dense streets and building interiors can change signal quality quickly. [8] [9]
What should I prepare before going to Rila Monastery or the mountains?
Download offline maps, save your destination and keep enough data for messaging and rerouting. On the road to Rila Monastery, in the Balkan Mountains and in Pirin, the best approach is to treat the eSIM as a navigation aid first and a constant connection second. [7] [9]
Do I need a different setup for the Black Sea coast?
Usually you do not need a different eSIM, but you may want a different usage pattern. On the coast, mobile data is often used for airport transfers, hotel check-in, taxi booking, restaurant searches and day-trip planning, so a plan with enough data for maps and messages is often more practical than a very small package. [7] [9]
Which apps are most useful for Sofia travel?
MPASS is the most directly useful local app for Sofia public transport. Google Maps is a strong companion for offline navigation and broader trip planning. Together they cover tickets, navigation and route checks, which is what most short-stay visitors need. [8] [9]
When should I install my eSIM?
Install it before you need it, but keep the activation timing in mind because different products can start on purchase, installation or first connection. The practical approach is to have the profile ready before departure, then switch to the data line when your plan says it should begin. [10]
