How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Kazakhstan
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Kazakhstan’s mobile market is commonly described by official sources as having three national operators: Kcell, Beeline, and Tele2/Altel. Coverage maps and public checker pages are available on each operator’s site, but travellers should still verify the exact address or route they care about.
Kcell
Publicly checks 5G availability by area; useful for confirming whether a specific district is covered before you travel. [1] [3]
Check coverage ↗Beeline Kazakhstan
Provides a public coverage/build-out map that can be used to check where the network is available and where expansion is in progress. [1] [4]
Check coverage ↗Tele2/Altel
Tele2 publishes a coverage map with 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G layers; Altel also provides a coverage page for checking service areas. [1] [5] [6]
Check coverage ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Kazakhstan
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Almaty and the Almaty region
- Astana and the northern steppe corridor
- Mangystau and the Caspian side
- East Kazakhstan and mountain areas
Almaty and the Almaty region
This is the most practical area to check before arrival if you plan city use plus day trips to places such as Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Kaindy Lake or Big Almaty Lake. Public operator maps matter here because your phone may spend part of the day in the city and part on mountain roads or in valley settlements. [7] [8] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Astana and the northern steppe corridor
Astana is a good place to rely on mobile data for taxis, maps and payments, but if your itinerary continues to Burabay, Kokshetau or smaller roadside stops, it is worth checking the operator maps for those exact points rather than assuming the city experience will match the road experience. [7] [8] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Mangystau and the Caspian side
For coastal roads, desert scenery and longer transfers, plan conservatively: download offline maps, keep navigation cached and compare the operator coverage pages for the towns and segments you will actually use. Small changes in your route can matter more than the city name on your booking. [7] [8] [4] [5] [6]
East Kazakhstan and mountain areas
In mountain travel, expect coverage to vary by road, valley and settlement. Check the operator map before leaving and keep one offline map app ready, especially if the trip includes nature stops rather than only major cities. [7] [8] [10]
Kazakhstan · eSIM
What to expect from mobile data in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan’s mobile market is served by three national operators: Kcell, Beeline and Tele2/Altel. Each publishes a public coverage page, so the most useful step for travellers is to check the exact city district, highway segment or resort area they will actually use rather than relying on a country-wide impression.
For city breaks, an eSIM is usually most helpful for navigation, ride-hailing, hotel check-ins and messaging. For trips that combine Almaty with mountain day trips, Astana with north-bound road travel, or longer itineraries toward the Caspian side and eastern mountain areas, it is smart to combine mobile data with offline maps and to verify coverage on the operator pages before leaving the city.
Useful apps and travel tools
ONAY! ↗
Official city transport companion for participating Kazakh cities. It supports transit card management and mobile payment flows, which makes it useful if you are moving around Almaty or other supported urban areas. [9]
2GIS ↗
Local maps and navigation app with an official Kazakhstan download page for Almaty. Useful for addresses, places and navigation when you want a map that works well on the ground in the city. [10]
Before you buy
Use public coverage maps before day trips
Kazakhstan is large, and the practical question is usually not whether a carrier exists in the country, but whether it covers the exact city district, highway segment or resort road you need. Public maps from the operators are the right place to check that detail. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Combine mobile data with offline maps
For travel beyond the main cities, save maps and directions in advance. That is especially helpful on routes into the Almaty region or into mountain and steppe areas where signal strength can change quickly from place to place. [7] [8] [10]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Kazakhstan
Which mobile networks should I compare for Kazakhstan?
The main national networks are Kcell, Beeline and Tele2/Altel. They all publish public coverage pages, so travellers can compare the areas that matter for their route instead of guessing from a broad country label. If your trip is mostly urban, compare city districts; if it includes roads or mountain stops, check those exact stretches too. [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Is one operator enough for city travel?
For a short stay focused on one city, any of the national operators may be enough if their coverage page shows service in the areas you will use. The better choice is the one that matches your route, hotel location and day trips, because city-centre coverage and road coverage are not the same thing. [3] [4] [5] [6]
What should I do if my itinerary includes Almaty and the mountains?
Check the operator maps before you leave the city and download offline maps in advance. The useful question is not just whether the network exists in Almaty, but whether it stays usable on the road toward places such as Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Kaindy Lake or Big Almaty Lake. [7] [8] [3] [4] [5] [6] [10]
Can I rely on mobile data for taxis and navigation in Astana?
Yes, mobile data is practical for maps, taxis and messages in Astana, but it still makes sense to check coverage again if you will continue beyond the city into northern steppe roads or smaller settlements. A city result does not automatically tell you what happens on the highway. [7] [8] [3] [4] [5] [6] [9] [10]
Should I install the eSIM before or after arrival?
Install it before departure if your device and plan allow that, then wait for the connection step that matches the product rules. The important thing is to keep your home SIM charges separate from the data eSIM and to follow the activation timing shown on the package screen. [13]
Which apps are actually useful after I land?
ONAY is helpful for supported city transport, and 2GIS is useful for maps and local navigation in Kazakhstan, especially in Almaty. Those two cover different travel needs: one for moving around by transit, the other for finding places and directions. [9] [10]
