How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name
Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.
Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.
Menu names can differ by phone model and system version.
04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Maldives
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
The official regulator lists Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives as nationwide telecom providers. This page treats that as the current national mobile operator set and does not infer package inclusion from it.
Dhiraagu
Official operator site. Dhiraagu states its coverage extends across the Maldives, including inhabited islands, resort islands and major industrial islands. [1] [2]
Official website ↗Ooredoo Maldives
Official operator site. Ooredoo publishes tourist SIM and network pages, but a public coverage tool page was not verified here, so coverage details are kept non-numeric. [1] [3]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

- Malé
- Greater Malé Area and Hulhumalé
- Ari Atoll
- Domestic ferry and island routes
Malé
Use Malé as the easiest place to activate and test service before moving on by ferry or domestic flight. In the capital area, taxi and ride-hailing apps are the most practical way to arrange short trips, and a stable mobile connection is helpful for quick coordination. [5] [7]
Greater Malé Area and Hulhumalé
For airport arrivals, transfers and city stays, a data eSIM is most useful when you want maps, messaging and ride booking immediately after landing. Keep in mind that transport links in the capital region are often managed through separate official apps and portals rather than a single all-in-one system. [5] [7] [10]
Ari Atoll
Ari Atoll is a good example of a place where phone use depends on island-by-island movement, resort transfers and whether you will stay on a local island or inside a resort zone. Download offline maps before departure and expect the need to switch between mobile data and property Wi‑Fi during transfers. [6] [9]
Domestic ferry and island routes
If your itinerary includes ferries or multiple islands, plan for occasional gaps while boarding, transferring and moving between terminals. A travel app for sea routes plus a taxi app in the capital area is often more useful than relying on a single network assumption. [9] [10] [5]
Maldives · eSIM
What to expect
The Maldives has two nationwide mobile networks listed by the official regulator: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives. For travellers, the practical choice is less about a single universal winner and more about where you are staying, how you move between islands, and whether you need data immediately after landing. Official operator pages, especially tourist SIM information, are useful for checking what each network sells publicly, while measurement reports help show how networks compare in user experience at a point in time.
Opensignal’s November 2024 report shows both operators with published Coverage Experience scores, which can help you compare measured experience without turning that study into a promise for every island or every trip. In the capital area and on resort or ferry-heavy itineraries, the best preparation is usually to install the eSIM before departure, keep offline maps ready, and use ride and travel apps where they apply.
Useful apps and travel tools
Avas App ↗
Local ride app for taxis and other passenger trips in the Malé and Hulhumalé area. [7] [5]
Maldivian App ↗
Official airline app for checking trips, managing bookings and receiving travel updates for domestic and international flights. [8]
OdiGo ↗
Sea transport booking app that is useful when your trip depends on scheduled ferries or private transfers between islands. [9]
Before you buy
Arrival and first setup
At the airport or in Malé, it is practical to install and test the eSIM before you move on to a resort or another island. That helps you confirm data works for maps, messages and ride booking while you still have the simplest access to support and hotel Wi‑Fi. [5] [3] [7]
Moving between islands
For island hopping, the useful question is not only which network is present, but how often you will be offline during transfers. Ferry and flight schedules, resort speedboats and check-in windows can create short periods when offline maps and downloaded booking details matter more than a single headline about coverage. [6] [8] [9]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Maldives
Which mobile networks are available in the Maldives?
The official regulator lists two nationwide telecom providers: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives. For travellers, that means you can compare the public offerings of both operators instead of assuming a long list of local brands. The useful next step is to match your trip style with the operator pages and with your need for fast data on arrival, transport apps and island transfers. [1] [2] [3]
Is a data eSIM useful if I am staying mostly on a resort island?
Yes, especially if you want maps, messaging and booking tools on arrival and during transfers. A resort stay can still involve airport transit, speedboat or domestic flight coordination, and short windows where you may want immediate data access. It is still worth checking the resort’s Wi‑Fi situation, because hotel Wi‑Fi and mobile data often complement each other rather than replace one another. [6] [3] [9]
Should I activate the eSIM before I leave home or after landing?
For most travellers, installing it before departure is the safer choice, because you can finish setup while you still have a familiar connection and time to troubleshoot. First connection may happen later, depending on the product and your phone settings, so it is best not to rely on a single activation moment. Keep your home SIM separate if you want to continue receiving normal calls or texts on your own number. [3] [8]
What is the best area to test the connection first?
Malé is the most practical place to test service first because you can confirm that data works before moving on to ferries, domestic flights or resort transfers. That also gives you time to open maps, ride apps and airline or ferry apps while you still have the easiest access to support and alternative Wi‑Fi. [5] [7] [8] [9]
Do I need a transport app in the Maldives?
If you will stay in or pass through the capital region, a ride app is useful for short city trips, while a sea-transport or airline app helps with island moves. The Maldives does not run on one single transport tool for every situation, so it is better to install only the apps that match your route. [7] [8] [9] [10]
Can I rely on one network for every island?
It is better to think in terms of trip segments rather than a single blanket expectation. The national operator set is small, but island travel, resort transfers and local-use patterns still matter. Review the operator pages, check the latest public information before you go, and use offline navigation for times when you may be in transit. [1] [2] [3] [4]
