Example: 5 MB per photo

Upload your own videos

≈ 47 clips

Example: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB

Watch video

HD example: 3 GB per hour

At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min

Make video calls

≈ 2 hr 46 min

1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour

Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.

Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.

  1. 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
  2. 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
  3. Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
  4. The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

How to install an eSIM in Papua New Guinea

Your first eSIM? Here is what to open and what to tap.

Check the exact model, regional variant and system version. If Add eSIM or EID is missing, contact support before buying. A brand name alone does not confirm compatibility.

Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.

These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Before your trip · install the eSIM

Use a stable Wi-Fi connection or hotspot. Your exact phone model must support eSIM and be unlocked for other operators.

  1. 01

    Open your eSIM installation

Connect the phone you will use for your eSIM to Wi-Fi. Choose one of the two options below. If this eSIM is already installed, skip to choosing the line for mobile data.

The app or email on this phone

In the Letisim app, open My eSIMs, choose your purchased eSIM and tap Install. On the preparation screen, tap Copy name and install.

Or open your eSIM email on this same phone and tap Install eSIM. If the link opens your order page first, use the installation button shown there.

A QR code on another screen

Open your eSIM’s QR code from the email or order on a computer, tablet or another phone. Point the camera of the phone you are installing the eSIM on at the code, then tap the installation prompt.

Both options lead to the phone’s system setup. Continue with step 2.

The button or camera did not open setup?

You can add the eSIM by scanning its QR code in Settings. Follow the path below, choose the QR scanner and use the code for your own purchase. If the QR is on this same phone, see the options without a second screen below the guide.

Give the new line a clear name

For example, “Letisim Papua New Guinea”, so you can distinguish it from your home SIM. This is a label on your phone; it does not change the number or plan.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular / Mobile Service → new eSIM → Cellular Plan Label → Custom

Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name

Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name

Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.

Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.

Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.

Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.

OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.

OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.

No second screen for your QR code?

If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators

Mobile operators in Papua New Guinea

Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.

NICTA’s current market materials name three national mobile network operators in Papua New Guinea: Digicel PNG, bmobile/Telikom, and Vodafone PNG. That is the practical operator list for travellers checking SIM and roaming options.

Digicel PNG

Digicel’s consumer guide says its mobile coverage reaches about 85% of 2G population, 50% of 3G population and 26% of 4G population in Papua New Guinea; for a traveller, the useful check is the operator’s own current service footprint and local signal on the route. [3] [4]

Official website ↗

bmobile / Telikom

bmobile’s public consumer materials point travellers to its coverage map and explain that service depends on being within network base-station range. A route check matters more than a country-wide assumption. [1] [2] [4]

Official website ↗

Vodafone PNG

Vodafone states its 3G/4G+ service is available in Port Moresby, Lae, Goroka, Mount Hagen and Madang, which is useful for city stays and domestic connections, but not a promise for every side trip or island transfer. [3] [5]

Official website ↗

The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

05 / Coverage

Coverage across Papua New Guinea

Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.

🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea
  1. Port Moresby
  2. Kokoda Track
  3. Trobriand Islands and Milne Bay waters
  4. Tufi and the Louisiade side trips

Port Moresby

Use the capital for arrival, hotel check-in and city navigation first. A map app and a second data option are helpful around the airport, CBD and nature-park visits, where you may switch between operators more easily than on out-of-town drives. [6] [7] [1] [3]

Kokoda Track

For trekking, download offline maps and messaging data before leaving Port Moresby or the nearest base. Mobile service on the track should be treated as route-dependent, so plan as if coverage may be intermittent and use data mainly for staging points and logistics. [6] [9] [1] [2] [10]

Trobriand Islands and Milne Bay waters

Island-hopping and dive trips are where an eSIM with a strong urban footprint matters most, because you may spend time between Alotau, boats and smaller islands. Check coverage before departing mainland points and keep offline maps for transfers and pier changes. [8] [6] [1] [3] [10]

Tufi and the Louisiade side trips

These are best treated as travel legs that begin with a solid connection in town and may thin out once you move to fjords, boats or small communities. Set up the eSIM before you travel, save documents offline and expect local conditions to shape connectivity more than distance alone. [9] [8] [1] [10]

What to know before you buy

Papua New Guinea’s mobile market is regulated by NICTA, the national ICT authority, and current market materials name three mobile network operators that matter for travellers: Digicel PNG, bmobile/Telikom and Vodafone PNG. That gives you a practical shortlist when you compare an eSIM or a local SIM for arrival, domestic flights and island transfers.

Coverage in Papua New Guinea is very route-dependent. In Port Moresby and some provincial centres, live data is often enough for maps, messaging and ride coordination. On the Kokoda Track, in Tufi, and across Milne Bay islands such as the Trobriands and the Louisiades, it is smarter to prepare offline first and treat mobile signal as something to use where available, not something to rely on everywhere.

Useful apps and travel tools

Google Maps ↗

Useful for live navigation, place search and offline maps when signal drops on longer transfers or boat connections. [10]

Before you buy

Public transport is patchy, so plan data around transfers

PNG travel often combines flights, PMVs, boats and transfers arranged through hotels or local operators. That makes mobile data useful for messages, ride coordination and checking changes, but it also means you should not assume constant signal during every leg. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Tourism hubs and island routes behave differently

Port Moresby and some provincial centres are better suited to active mobile use than smaller island or trek segments. For islands and remote access points, the safest approach is to prepare offline content and treat live data as a convenience rather than a guarantee. [6] [8] [9] [10]

06 / FAQ

Questions about eSIM in Papua New Guinea

Which mobile networks should I compare for Papua New Guinea?

The practical national operators to check are Digicel PNG, bmobile/Telikom and Vodafone PNG. NICTA’s market material and consumer pages show that these are the networks travellers are most likely to encounter when looking for local SIMs, eSIMs or roaming alternatives. The best choice depends on the route you actually plan to use, not just the country name on the plan. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Is coverage the same in cities and on island trips?

No. Port Moresby and some other provincial centres are the easiest places to use mobile data for navigation, messages and bookings. Once you move into trekking routes, boats, fjords or smaller islands, service can become much less predictable. For that reason, an eSIM is most useful when you install it early and also save offline maps before you leave a city. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

What should I do for the Kokoda Track?

Plan the track as an offline-first trip. Download maps, tickets, hotel details and messages before departure, then use mobile data mainly at staging points or when you return to stronger signal areas. The route is a trek, not a city corridor, so the safest assumption is that connectivity can change from one segment to the next. [6] [9] [10]

Can I rely on my phone for Alotau, the Trobriand Islands or the Louisiade Archipelago?

You can usually use mobile data more confidently around mainland entry points and larger centres than on every island leg. For island-hopping, the practical approach is to check coverage before you leave the mainland, keep your boarding and hotel details offline, and use maps that still work without signal. That way you stay flexible if a boat transfer or weather change disrupts the connection. [8] [6] [10]

Which destination areas are the best fit for an eSIM?

An eSIM is most helpful on journeys that mix city time with short transfers, especially in Port Moresby and on domestic connections through provincial centres. It also helps when you need navigation and messaging around Tufi, Milne Bay and other island routes, but it works best when paired with offline maps and realistic expectations about local signal. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Do I need special setup for Papua New Guinea?

No special country-specific installation step is usually needed. The useful preparation is to install the eSIM before travel, keep your home SIM separate from your data line, and make sure offline maps are ready in case the connection drops during transfers. If you are using the plan for voice or banking codes, check those functions separately from mobile data. [2] [10]
