How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Slovakia
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Official regulator and operator pages identify the four current national mobile networks used in Slovakia: O2 Slovakia, Orange Slovensko, Slovak Telekom and SWAN / 4ka. Coverage maps are address-based and should be checked for the exact hotel, station or attraction you plan to use.
O2 Slovakia
Check outdoor and indoor availability by address on O2’s coverage map. [2] [4]
Check coverage ↗Orange Slovensko
Orange provides an interactive coverage map with indoor and outdoor views. [2] [3]
Check coverage ↗Slovak Telekom
Telekom’s map is useful for checking service availability at a specific address before travel. [2] [5]
Check coverage ↗SWAN / 4ka
4ka’s coverage map notes that some service availability can use national roaming, so address checks matter. [2] [6]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| O2 Slovakia | — | 36.9 | 2025-02[7] |
| Orange Slovensko | — | 61.9 | 2025-02[7] |
| Slovak Telekom | — | 59.3 | 2025-02[7] |
| SWAN / 4ka | — | 22.7 | 2025-02[7] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Slovakia
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Bratislava
- High Tatras
- Slovak Paradise
- Slovak Karst
Bratislava
For the capital, the most practical step is to verify coverage at the exact apartment or hotel address, then keep a second option in mind for busy tram and rail corridors. The city tourism board describes Bratislava as compact and well suited to walking, with efficient public transport, so mobile data is especially useful for maps, route changes and ride-hailing on the move. [8] [13] [4] [5]
High Tatras
In the Tatras, plan around where you will actually stay and start hiking: Poprad, Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské pleso are the key access points highlighted by the tourism board. Download route and map material before you leave the hotel, because the region app lets you store selected routes on the device for use without internet on the trail. [9] [15] [16]
Slovak Paradise
This park is best approached as a day-trip or hut-to-hut area where preparation matters more than assumptions. The tourism board points to Čingov, Podlesok and Dedinky as useful access points, so check coverage and download offline navigation before you reach the gorges and ladders. [10] [14]
Slovak Karst
For cave visits and karst landscapes, data is most useful for timing, parking, tickets and meeting points rather than for deep-route navigation. The official tourism pages describe this as a large karst area with many caves, so it is sensible to preload directions and not rely on live data underground or in low-signal valleys. [11] [14]

What to expect from mobile data in Slovakia
Slovakia has four current national mobile networks: O2 Slovakia, Orange Slovensko, Slovak Telekom and SWAN / 4ka. Their public coverage tools are useful for checking the exact hotel, apartment, station or attraction you plan to use, and that matters more than broad assumptions about a whole city or region. In practice, the best choice for a traveller is the plan that matches your route and your main places of stay.
Opensignal’s February 2025 report gives a dated snapshot of real-world download speeds among the four main operators: Orange 61.9 Mbps, Slovak Telekom 59.3 Mbps, O2 36.9 Mbps and 4ka 22.7 Mbps. That report is a useful reference point, but it is not a promise for your specific street, train, hotel room or mountain trail. For better day-to-day comfort, pair your eSIM with offline maps and a backup plan for public transport and lodging addresses.

Before you buy
Coverage checks are address-based
The operator maps are designed for a specific address or place, not for a whole city or region. For a traveller, that means the most useful check is the hotel, apartment, station, campground or attraction you will use most often. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Touring in mountains and caves needs offline backup
Slovakia.travel’s hiking and app pages emphasize offline maps and downloaded routes for mountain travel. That is especially helpful in the Tatras, Slovak Paradise and Slovak Karst, where you may want maps and booking details even when live data is less dependable. [9] [10] [11] [14] [15] [16]
Bratislava and Trnava fit public-transport use well
For the Bratislava area, IDS BK covers city and regional transport and the app supports tickets, route search and timetable info. For intercity bus trips, Slovak Lines’ app is useful for buying and managing tickets on popular domestic and cross-border routes. [13] [12] [8] [16]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Slovakia
Which network should I look at first in Slovakia?
Start with the address you will actually use most often, then compare the public coverage maps of O2, Orange, Slovak Telekom and 4ka. The useful question is not which operator looks best on a country map, but which one covers your hotel, apartment, station or meeting point well enough for the places you will visit. If you move between Bratislava and mountain areas, it is worth checking more than one operator before buying. [3] [4] [5] [6] [1]
Is mobile data important enough for city travel here?
Yes, especially in Bratislava and when you are mixing trains, buses and ride-hailing. The capital is compact and easy to explore, but data helps with live directions, ticketing, address lookups and last-minute changes. Public-transport apps for Bratislava also make good use of mobile data, while the same eSIM can cover your day trips and cross-border bus travel. [8] [13] [12]
What should I do before going to the High Tatras?
Download maps and any route information before you leave your accommodation. The High Tatras region app is designed for planning and can keep selected routes available on the device, which is useful once you move onto trails or cable-car areas. It is smarter to treat your eSIM as the tool for check-ins, messaging and changing plans than as the only navigation method in the mountains. [9] [15] [16]
Does the Slovakia travel app replace offline navigation on its own?
It helps a lot, but it should not be treated as the only source. The official tourist-map app offers offline topographic maps and route recording, yet the publisher notes that it does not include every existing trail and point. For a traveller, that means it is a strong backup, not a substitute for checking the route you plan to walk. [14]
How useful is data in Slovak Paradise and Slovak Karst?
Very useful for planning, entry times, parking, tickets and meeting points, but you should expect to rely less on live navigation once you are on the trail or in cave areas. The tourism pages highlight access points such as Čingov, Podlesok and Dedinky for Slovak Paradise, and they describe Slovak Karst as a major cave region. Preloading directions and tickets makes the trip smoother. [10] [11] [14]
Can I rely on one operator for the whole trip?
You can try, but a safer approach is to match the plan to your route. A city stay in Bratislava, a rail journey through the west, and a hiking trip in the Tatras do not create the same connectivity needs. Using the operator maps for your main stops gives you a better chance of avoiding dead zones and reduces the risk of buying data for the wrong area. [3] [4] [5] [6] [8] [9]
