How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Bolivia
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
This comparison covers Entel, Tigo and Viva. Check which network is listed in your chosen eSIM package, then compare coverage for the places on your itinerary.

The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

Coverage across Bolivia
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- La Paz
- Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol
- Sucre
- Rurrenabaque and Madidi
La Paz
La Paz is a practical place to test your eSIM before onward trips. City riding, taxis and cable-car routes benefit from having data ready, and the ATT and tourism sources describe the city as a major tourist gateway and cable-transport hub. [1] [7]
Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol
For boat crossings and island stays, download offline maps in advance and assume that signal can change as you move between lakeside towns, boat docks and the island itself. Keep local transport details saved before departure. [8]
Sucre
Sucre is a useful base for city walks and day trips. A data plan helps with maps, messaging and ride-hailing while moving between the historic center, bus terminals and nearby attractions. [9]
Rurrenabaque and Madidi
This Amazon route usually means boats, lodges and longer transfers, so it is sensible to install and test the eSIM before leaving La Paz or Santa Cruz. Save reservations and meeting points offline. [10]

What to expect from mobile data in Bolivia
Bolivia’s mobile market is built around three national operators confirmed by the telecom regulator and market sources: Entel, Tigo and Viva. Public coverage tools are available for Entel and Tigo, which makes it possible to check service by operator before you choose a plan. The practical takeaway for travelers is simple: compare the network you expect to use with the places on your itinerary, especially if you are moving between La Paz, the lake region, Sucre and the Amazon side of the country.
A measurement snapshot from Opensignal’s November 2024 report gave Entel the strongest Coverage Experience score among the three operators, and Entel also led the report’s Download Speed Experience figure. That is a useful reference point, but it is still a dated study, not a promise of identical performance on every street, road or excursion route. For trip planning, the smarter approach is to use the operator maps, keep offline maps ready, and choose a data amount that matches how much you rely on ride-hailing, messaging and navigation.
Useful apps and travel tools
Yala Mi Teleférico ↗
Official app for using Mi Teleférico services in La Paz, including virtual card functions. Useful if your itinerary includes cable-car travel in the city. [13]
App La Paz Bus ↗

Pasaporte Áreas Protegidas ↗
Government conservation-passport app for visiting protected areas, recording trips and collecting digital stamps. Useful when your itinerary includes nature destinations. [14]
Before you buy
Tourist routes are spread across very different landscapes
Bolivia’s tourism destinations include high-altitude La Paz and the Cordillera Real, the lake region around Titicaca, colonial Sucre, the Amazon route to Rurrenabaque and Madidi, and the eastern heritage area of Chiquitos. A single data plan can cover all of them, but the way you travel changes what you should prepare for: city navigation, transfers, boat crossings or multi-hour road trips. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Coverage checks are operator-specific
Bolivia’s regulator identifies Entel, Tigo and Viva as the mobile operators to compare, and public coverage tools are available for Entel and Tigo on their official websites. That means travellers can check service pages before choosing a plan, but real-world experience still depends on the exact route, device and network generation available at the place of use. [1] [3] [4]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Bolivia
Which mobile networks should I compare before buying a Bolivia eSIM?
The regulator and market sources point to three national mobile operators: Entel, Tigo and Viva. Entel and Tigo have public coverage tools on their official websites, so you can check their service pages before deciding which plan matches your route. That matters more than choosing by brand alone, because your experience can differ between city streets, highways and lake or mountain transfers. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Is one network clearly the best everywhere in Bolivia?
No. Opensignal’s November 2024 report showed Entel leading Coverage Experience and Download Speed Experience, while Tigo and Viva were close on some other measures. That is a useful snapshot, but not a universal rule for every trip. For travelers, the better question is which operator fits the cities and routes you will actually use. [5]
Where is mobile data most useful on a Bolivia trip?
It is especially useful in La Paz for rides and cable-car travel, around Titicaca for transfers and boat logistics, in Sucre for walking around the historic center, and on the Rurrenabaque and Madidi route where trip details are easier to manage when saved on the phone. The common thread is navigation and coordination, not just browsing. [7] [8] [9] [10]
Should I rely on signal in remote nature areas?
You should plan conservatively. Bolivia’s tourism pages show that some of the most attractive itineraries involve mountains, lakes and Amazon travel, which often means changing conditions rather than a single fixed network pattern. Download offline maps and keep essential booking details saved locally, because that is what helps when you move between towns, docks and lodges. [8] [10] [11]
Which apps are worth having before I arrive?
For La Paz, the most relevant apps on their official websites are Yala Mi Teleférico and App La Paz Bus. If your trip includes protected areas, the government’s Pasaporte Áreas Protegidas app can also be useful. These apps help with local transport and trip organization, but they work best when you already have data ready on arrival. [12] [13] [14]
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it before you need it, ideally while you still have a stable connection. Product validity can start at purchase, installation or first connection depending on the plan, so it is safer to set everything up in advance and then switch to the eSIM when you land or when you are ready to use it. That also lets you keep your home SIM separate from travel data. [13] [14]
