How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.
Menu names can differ by phone model and system version.
04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Germany
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Germany has four public mobile networks: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica (o2) and 1&1. That does not mean every eSIM package can use all four, so check the package details and compare coverage for your main addresses or route.
Deutsche Telekom
Telekom provides a public mobile coverage map. Check the exact hotel, station or road segment before longer rail or road trips. [2] [3] [5]
Check coverage ↗Vodafone
Vodafone is one of Germany’s national mobile networks. If your trip includes smaller towns or several stops, compare important locations before relying on one network for the whole route. [2] [6]
Official website ↗o2
o2 offers a public mobile coverage check. It is useful for hotels, stations and day-trip destinations before you travel. [2] [7]
Check coverage ↗1&1
1&1 is Germany’s fourth public mobile network and is still expanding its own footprint alongside national roaming. Check important locations carefully if your package uses 1&1. [1] [3] [8]
Official website ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deutsche Telekom | 8.65 | — | 2025-11[4] |
| Vodafone | 8.5 | — | 2025-11[4] |
| o2 | 8.69 | — | 2025-11[4] |
| 1&1 | — | — | — |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Germany
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Berlin
- Munich
- Bavarian Alps
- Black Forest
Berlin
Berlin is straightforward for maps, tickets and messaging, but station areas, indoor venues and underground segments can behave differently. Check the exact address for your hotel, airport or museum, and keep an offline city map for metro-heavy days. [1] [5] [7] [9] [10]
Munich
For a city stay in Munich, address checks around your hotel, station and main sights are usually enough. If you are mixing city time with airport runs or day trips, compare those specific points instead of assuming one result covers the whole area. [1] [5] [7]
Bavarian Alps
Before mountain days, save routes, tickets and accommodation details offline. In alpine areas it is more useful to check roads, valley bases and cable-car departure points than to judge coverage by a single town nearby. [1] [5] [7] [8]
Black Forest
In the Black Forest, plan around the places where you actually need data: roads, trailheads, stations and accommodation. A route-based coverage check is more practical than a broad regional assumption, especially if you are driving or changing towns often. [1] [5] [7]

Why use an eSIM in Germany
Germany has four public mobile networks: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica (o2) and 1&1. For travellers, the practical choice depends less on a broad nationwide promise and more on the exact places where you will use mobile internet. The regulator and operator tools make address or route checks possible, which is especially useful for hotels, stations, airports and day-trip stops. Opensignal’s November 2025 report shows close Coverage Experience scores among the measured national networks, with o2 and Telekom very close and Vodafone also near them.
That makes route planning more important than generic rankings. A Berlin city break, a Munich stay, mountain travel in Bavaria or a scenic drive through the Black Forest can all involve different usage points across the day. Save offline maps and any key tickets before you set off, and check your chosen package carefully before installation: depending on the package, validity may begin on first connection or already at purchase.
Useful apps and travel tools
BVG Fahrinfo-App ↗

Before you buy
Check coverage by exact address or route
In Germany, a street address or a specific route is more useful than a broad city label. Compare the locations that matter most to your trip: hotel, station, airport, ferry port or day-trip stop. [1] [2] [5] [7] [8]
Indoors and underground may differ
Reception indoors or underground may not match what you see outdoors. If your main SIM supports Wi-Fi calling, it can help for calls in buildings; for navigation, keep offline maps ready before you go below ground. [1]
1&1 is worth checking separately
1&1 is the newer fourth mobile network and continues to expand its own footprint while using national roaming. If your package connects to 1&1, check the places where you expect to use mobile data most often. [3] [8]
Check when package validity starts
Package validity can start either on first connection or from the moment of purchase, depending on the package. Check the package screen before installing early or saving it for arrival day. [11]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Germany
Which mobile networks are available in Germany?
Germany has four public mobile networks: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica (o2) and 1&1. For a traveller, the useful next step is to confirm which of those networks your eSIM package can actually use, then compare coverage for the addresses or route that matter most to your trip. [1] [2] [3]
How should I choose between networks for a trip?
Start with the places where you expect to use mobile internet most: your hotel, airport, main station, rental pickup point and any day-trip destination. Then compare the operator tools for those exact locations. Opensignal’s latest Germany report shows that the measured national networks are close on Coverage Experience, so the best choice often depends on your specific route rather than on one countrywide winner. [4] [5] [7] [8]
When should I install or activate my Germany eSIM?
Check the package details first. Depending on the package, validity may start on first connection or from the time of purchase. That means early installation can be convenient, but you should confirm the start rule before you do it. [11]
Is one network always best in Berlin?
Not always. Central districts, station areas, indoor venues and underground sections can differ, so it is better to check your exact address instead of relying on a citywide assumption. Berlin’s official transport information and the BVG Fahrinfo app are useful once you are moving around the city. [1] [5] [7] [9] [10]
What should I do for mountain, forest or coastal trips in Germany?
Do a route-based coverage check before you leave, and save offline maps, tickets or booking details in advance. For places such as the Bavarian Alps or the Black Forest, checking roads, stations, accommodation and trail access points is usually more useful than judging the whole region by one nearby town.
