How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Hong Kong
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
OFCA’s public services-provider page lists four mobile network service operators in Hong Kong. Its statistics page also records five mobile network operators as of July 2026, so the practical traveller comparison is the four major networks commonly used for local SIM and eSIM service, while MVNO offers may ride on those networks. Coverage still varies by handset support, indoor conditions and exact location.

Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

Coverage across Hong Kong
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Central
- Kowloon
- Lantau Island
- New Territories
Central
Central works well as a base for live navigation, taxis and quick rail or ferry transfers. The practical test is not only the operator but also indoor reception in towers, stations and underground links, so keep offline maps ready for short walks between exits, piers and hillsides. [5] [6] [7] [4]
Kowloon
Kowloon is convenient for shopping, sightseeing and rail-based day trips. A steady everyday data plan is usually more useful here than chasing headline speeds, especially if your routine is stations, malls and dense streets where indoor conditions matter. [5] [6] [7] [10]
Lantau Island
Lantau combines airport access, tourist attractions and outdoor stretches, so it helps to think in route segments: airport and city transit first, then cable car, villages or trail time. For hikes or longer outdoor stays, official country-park coverage pages and offline maps are the safer planning tools. [3] [5] [9] [12]
New Territories
The New Territories mix suburbs, trails and cross-boundary movement, so choose a plan with enough everyday data for maps, ride-hailing and messaging. OFCA notes that country-park coverage is not practically complete, which makes current operator coverage pages and offline maps more useful than assumptions. [3] [4] [6] [12]

Coverage and network overview
Hong Kong has a dense mobile market with four major mobile network service operators listed by the regulator, while its statistics page also records five mobile network operators as of July 2026. For travellers, the practical comparison is the main networks and the coverage tools they publish, because service can differ by district, station, tunnel and indoor space.
For city-centre use, everyday data for navigation and messaging matters most. For hikes, country parks and longer excursions on Lantau or in the New Territories, official country-park coverage pages and offline maps are useful because OFCA says 100% country-park coverage is not practicable. A May 2025 Opensignal report shows csl, SmarTone and CMHK with Coverage Experience scores of 8.82, 8.80 and 8.06, but that is a dated snapshot rather than a promise for a specific street, hotel or trail today.

Before you buy
What coverage pages can tell a traveller
Public coverage pages are useful for checking whether an operator has service in a district, station, tunnel or country-park area, but they do not promise identical performance in every room or on every hillside. In Hong Kong, the regulator says country-park coverage cannot be 100% because of the terrain, and the hiking-trail survey exists as a reference rather than a guarantee. [3] [4] [5] [8] [9] [11]
Why maps, taxis and messages come first
For most visitors, the main daily need is reliable data for navigation, ride-hailing, translation and chat. That makes a clear data allowance more useful than a flashy speed promise, especially when you move between MTR lines, ferry piers, airport facilities and busy indoor spaces. [5] [6] [7] [10]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Hong Kong
Which network should I choose for a short trip?
For a short stay, the best fit is usually the network whose coverage tools match the places you will actually visit. City travellers often care most about stable data for maps and ride-hailing, while visitors heading to country parks or outer areas should compare the operator’s public coverage pages for those routes before buying. The May 2025 Opensignal report is useful as a broad snapshot, but it should not be treated as a guarantee for one street, hotel or trail. [3] [4] [8] [9] [10]
Do I need one eSIM for the whole territory?
Usually one data eSIM is enough if your trip is concentrated in central districts and rail-connected sightseeing areas. If you plan a lot of outdoor time, boat transfers or long days in the New Territories or on Lantau, it is sensible to choose a plan with enough data for maps, messaging and transport apps, plus offline maps as backup. That way you do not depend on hotel Wi‑Fi or on finding a store after arrival. [3] [5] [6] [7]
Can I use an eSIM and keep my home SIM active?
Yes, many travellers keep their home SIM for calls or banking messages and use the eSIM for mobile data. That separation is often convenient in Hong Kong because you can keep your usual number reachable while relying on the local data eSIM for navigation, taxis and transit apps. Home-SIM roaming charges and the data eSIM are separate costs and separate services. [1] [6] [7]
How important is indoor coverage in Hong Kong?
Very important. Hong Kong’s network experience can change sharply between open streets, station concourses, tunnels and indoor areas such as malls or office towers. That is why official operator coverage tools are more useful than general assumptions, and why travellers should think about the actual route: airport arrival, MTR travel, ferry piers, hotel check-in and evening walking all place different demands on the network. [4] [6] [7] [8] [9] [11]
Is there a best option for hiking or country parks?
There is no universal best choice for every trail, because hills, valleys and tree cover affect service in different ways. OFCA says complete country-park coverage is not practicable, so for hikes the best preparation is to check the operator’s country-park coverage page, download offline maps, and keep your route details available offline. That approach is more reliable than choosing by headline speed alone. [3] [9] [12]
What should I install before arrival?
Before arrival, install your eSIM profile, download offline maps, and set up the transport apps you are likely to use. HKeMobility helps with route search and live transport information, MTR Mobile is useful if you will ride the rail network often, and the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s app page helps you find official travel tools. Doing this in advance reduces the chance of needing a physical SIM counter on arrival day. [5] [6] [7]
