How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name
Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.
Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.
Line name: Letisim Hungary

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.
Menu names can differ by phone model and system version.
04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Hungary
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Hungary’s current national mobile networks are presented as the three networks identified by NMHH market material and current operator coverage pages: Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One. That does not mean every Letisim package includes all three.
Magyar Telekom
Check the live map for your exact hotel, apartment, station area or driving route before relying on mobile data for maps, taxi apps and messages. [1] [2] [3]
Check coverage ↗Yettel
Use the operator’s own coverage tool to compare city stays, lake resorts and the roads between them at address level. [1] [2] [4]
Check coverage ↗One
The map helps you check the local picture for the place you will actually use, instead of assuming the same result across a whole district or county. [1] [2] [5]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magyar Telekom | 7.9 | 53.2 | 2025-08[1] |
| Yettel | 7.4 | 72 | 2025-08[1] |
| One | 7.6 | 31.6 | 2025-08[1] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Hungary
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Budapest
- Lake Balaton
- Debrecen and Hortobágy
- Pécs and Baranya
Budapest
For the capital, compare the exact address rather than the city name alone. Around hotels, stations, riverfront streets and major sights, a data eSIM is mainly about keeping navigation, ride-hailing and messaging steady. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Lake Balaton
Around the lake, check the town or shore you will stay on, because resort centres, marinas and the road between villages can differ from each other. Save offline maps before longer drives or boat days. [4] [5] [7] [11]
Debrecen and Hortobágy
Debrecen is a practical base for eastern Hungary, while Hortobágy and the surrounding open landscapes are a good reason to download maps in advance and not depend on live data everywhere on the route. [8] [10] [11]
Pécs and Baranya
For Pécs and the surrounding county, compare the city-centre result with the roads you will actually use, especially if you are combining sightseeing with wine-country day trips. [5] [11]

Overview
Hungary’s mobile market is straightforward for travellers because the main national networks are easy to compare on official coverage tools, and the better choice often depends on your exact address, not just the city name. If you are staying in central Budapest, heading to Lake Balaton, or using Debrecen as a base for the east, checking the operator map for your hotel, station or road segment is more useful than assuming one brand behaves the same everywhere.
Independent measurement is also helpful. The latest Opensignal Hungary report includes the three main networks and shows measurable differences in nationwide coverage experience and download speed, so it can guide expectations without pretending to replace a live address check. For travel use, that usually means one simple rule: compare the live map for the places you will visit, then pick the plan that fits your route and device setup.
Useful apps and travel tools
BudapestGO ↗
Budapest’s official public-transport app for route planning, tickets and service information. [9]
MÁVPlusz ↗
The national rail app from MÁV Group, useful for train tickets and planning intercity trips around Hungary. [10]
Google Maps ↗
A familiar map app with offline downloads, useful as a backup when mobile data is patchy. [11]
Before you buy
What matters most before you choose a plan
In Hungary, the useful question is not only whether a network exists, but how it behaves at the places you will actually use it: your hotel, the train corridor, the lakefront, or the suburb where you arrive after dark. Operator maps are the right place to verify address-level availability, while the Opensignal report is useful for comparing nationwide coverage experience and download speed between the main networks. [1] [3] [4] [5]
Why offline maps still help
Even with a data eSIM, offline maps are worth saving for longer highway stretches, rural detours and underground movement in large stations. Google Maps supports downloading areas in advance, so basic navigation stays available if the connection weakens or disappears temporarily. [11]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Hungary
Which network should I choose for a trip to Hungary?
Choose the plan that matches the places you will actually use it. In Hungary, the live operator maps are the right way to compare your hotel, apartment, station area or driving route, while Opensignal is useful for a broad comparison of the main networks’ measured experience. If you are staying in Budapest only, the best practical choice may differ from what works better for a lake stay, a rail-heavy itinerary or a countryside detour. [1] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Can I check coverage before buying?
Yes. Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One all publish coverage pages you can use before purchase or arrival. Those maps are more useful than general claims because they let you check a specific address or area. For planning, that means you can verify your hotel, the station you will arrive at, or the lake town where you plan to stay. [3] [4] [5]
Is coverage the same in Budapest, Balaton and Debrecen?
Not necessarily. Budapest is a dense urban environment, Lake Balaton mixes town centres, shoreline resorts and road travel, and Debrecen with nearby Hortobágy combines a city base with more open landscapes. The practical move is to check each stop separately rather than assume one result covers the whole itinerary. [6] [7] [8]
Are the main networks useful for rail travel and day trips?
Yes, but rail corridors and rural segments are exactly where a live coverage check matters most. If your trip includes MÁV trains, lake excursions or long drives, the useful habit is to download offline maps in advance and keep the eSIM for live navigation, ticketing and messaging whenever the signal is good. [10] [11] [3] [4] [5]
Do I need a separate app for getting around Hungary?
For Budapest, BudapestGO is the official public-transport app; for trains and intercity trips, MÁVPlusz is the national rail app. Google Maps is a sensible backup because it supports offline maps. Together they cover the most common travel needs for routes, tickets and fallback navigation. [9] [10] [11]
When should I install the eSIM?
You can install it before departure, on arrival or before first use, depending on the product and your phone settings. The practical point is to keep your home SIM charges separate from your data eSIM and make sure data roaming is assigned to the eSIM line if that is how your device is set up. [12]
