How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name
Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.
Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Ireland
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Ireland’s main national mobile networks are the three large operators identified in ComReg market reporting and Opensignal’s country report: 3, eir and Vodafone. This page focuses on those national networks rather than on MVNO brands that resell access on them.
Vodafone Ireland
Use Vodafone’s network coverage pages to check whether service is expected at a specific location before you buy or travel. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Check coverage ↗Three Ireland
Three provides a coverage-checker entry point from its support pages; travellers should verify the exact address or route stop they care about. [1] [2] [5]
Check coverage ↗eir
If your package includes eir, confirm mobile coverage for your accommodation and route with the operator. A shop locator or home-internet availability check does not establish coverage for a phone. [1] [6]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Ireland
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Dublin
- Cork
- County Donegal
- Connemara
Dublin
In the capital, a data eSIM is mainly about staying online for maps, ride-hailing, hotel check-ins and transit apps while moving between the city centre, the airport and nearby coastal or suburban stops. If you plan to use public transport often, download journey tools before arrival so you can compare live departures with offline map backup when needed. [7] [10] [11] [16]
Cork
Cork city is easy to handle with mobile data if you are mixing the centre, the harbour, day trips and car-free visits beyond the city. Keep your map area saved before leaving for coastal towns or ferry connections, because route changes are easier to manage when the navigation app already has the region on the phone. [10] [11] [15] [16]
County Donegal
Donegal suits travellers who may spend long stretches on roads, around beaches or on scenic stops with changing signal conditions. Make sure offline maps are downloaded and important bookings are available offline too, because travel here is often spread across wide distances rather than concentrated in one town. [10] [11] [12]
Connemara
Connemara is a place where hiking, national-park visits and scenic driving are common, so a travel plan should not rely on live data alone. Download maps and tickets before setting off, and treat the eSIM as a practical tool for directions and messaging rather than as a guarantee at every trailhead or overlook. [10] [11] [13] [14]

What to know before you choose
Ireland’s mobile market is built around three national networks: Vodafone, Three and eir. Each operator offers its own coverage checks, but the traveller’s real question is whether service is available at the exact places you will use most often, such as your hotel, station, ferry terminal or walking route. ComReg’s public Siteviewer is designed as a predicted outdoor coverage map, so it is useful for a first pass, not a promise about every indoor room or remote stop.
For most visitors, the best plan choice is the one that gives enough data for navigation, ride-hailing, messaging and occasional streaming without forcing you to rely on hotel Wi‑Fi. In Dublin, coverage checks matter for airport transfers and daily transit; in Cork, they matter for city-and-coast combinations; in Donegal and Connemara, offline maps are especially practical because trips often spread across roads, viewpoints and trailheads. A good setup is one that keeps your phone usable even when signal changes from one stop to the next.

Before you buy
Three national networks, but traveller checks still matter
ComReg identifies Ireland’s mobile market through the three national operators, and its Siteviewer FAQ explains that the public map is for predicted outdoor coverage and not a live service guarantee. For a trip, that means the useful check is the exact address, hotel, station or route stop you will use, not a broad assumption about the whole county. [1] [2]
Outdoor coverage maps are helpful, but buildings and terrain still affect service
Operator coverage pages and ComReg’s guidance are good for deciding which network to try, yet actual use can differ indoors, in dense streets, on hills or during heavy demand. That is why a traveller should keep a second option in mind, especially for a road trip or a mixed city-and-countryside itinerary. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Public transport apps are useful in Dublin and beyond
TFI Live shows real-time departures for the main urban operators, while TFI Go and Leap Top-Up help with ticketing and fare management. They are useful not only in Dublin but also for national journeys that combine bus, rail and local services. [7] [8] [9]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Ireland
Which mobile networks should I think about in Ireland?
The main national networks are Vodafone, Three and eir. They all publish coverage or availability tools, but the practical check for a traveller is the exact location you plan to use. That could be a city hotel, a train station, a ferry terminal or a trailhead. A broad national label is not enough on its own, especially if your trip mixes urban days with countryside drives. [1] [2] [3] [5] [6]
Is a coverage map enough to choose a plan?
It is a helpful start, but not enough by itself. ComReg says Siteviewer is not intended to represent mobile coverage in the strict sense; it shows predicted outdoor coverage. That means indoor use, building materials, local congestion and terrain can change the experience. The safest approach is to combine a coverage check with your own route and accommodation list. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Do I need offline maps in Ireland?
They are a smart backup, especially if you will drive in Donegal, explore Connemara, or move around outside the main city centre. Google Maps supports offline downloads, and travellers can also save key bookings and ticket screens locally. Offline maps do not replace mobile data, but they reduce stress when the signal changes during a road trip or on a coastal route. [10] [11] [12] [13]
Which apps are most useful for getting around?
TFI Live is the best first download for public transport in Ireland because it provides real-time departures, timetables and route planning. TFI Go is useful for mobile ticketing on selected services, and TFI Leap Top-Up helps if you use a Leap Card. If you are combining transport with driving or walking, keep Google Maps offline maps as a backup. [7] [8] [9] [10]
How should I think about data use on a trip?
Use the eSIM for navigation, taxi apps, ride updates, messaging and basic trip management, then keep expensive or heavy usage for Wi‑Fi when it is available. The most important planning point is that your home SIM may still charge separately for voice, texts or roaming unless you manage it. A data eSIM is there to make the phone useful on the move, not to replace every mobile service automatically. [3] [4] [7] [10]
