How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Give the new line a clear name
For example, “Letisim Panama”, so you can distinguish it from your home SIM. This is a label on your phone; it does not change the number or plan.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular / Mobile Service → new eSIM → Cellular Plan Label → Custom
Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name
Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.
Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.
Line name: Letisim Panama

Check your connection
Turn off Wi-Fi and open a map or website. If it loads, mobile data is working. If it does not, turn airplane mode on for about 30 seconds, turn it off and wait for a connection. Recheck the selected line and package settings.

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Panama
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Panama’s current mobile market has been narrowed by regulator notices and the 2024 Digicel closure process. This page lists the active national networks that could be verified from official regulator material and operator pages; it does not imply every roaming package includes every network.
Tigo Panamá
Official coverage map and service map published by the operator. Travellers can check the areas they expect to visit, but map detail is not a guarantee of indoor or street-by-street service. [3] [4] [5]
Check coverage ↗Cable & Wireless Panamá, S.A.
Ask Cable & Wireless Panamá, S.A. about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [2] [3]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Panama
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Panama City and the canal corridor
- Colón and the Caribbean gateway
- Chiriquí highlands and western routes
- Coiba, the Gulf of Chiriquí and island trips
Panama City and the canal corridor
Best for airport arrivals, hotel check-in, taxi apps and city navigation. Before a day with the Panama Canal, Casco Viejo or business districts, download offline maps and keep a backup payment method for toll roads and transfers. [1] [4] [7] [8] [11]
Colón and the Caribbean gateway
Useful for cruise calls, port transfers and day trips along the Atlantic side. Check coverage before moving between the city, port areas and highway segments, because service needs can change quickly with stops and vehicle routes. [1] [4] [11]
Chiriquí highlands and western routes
For Boquete, David and mountain drives, plan for patchier handoff between valleys and roads than in the capital. Save maps before departure and keep messaging apps ready for short check-ins rather than constant streaming. [1] [7] [11]
Coiba, the Gulf of Chiriquí and island trips
On boats, islands and marine excursions, connectivity depends on where you are relative to shore and on the operator used by the boat or lodge. Download tickets, maps and contact details in advance; treat mobile data as a convenience, not a trip dependency. [1] [7] [11]
Panama · eSIM
Why an eSIM helps in Panama
Panama’s mobile market is regulated by ASEP, and the active national network picture has changed over time. For a traveller, the useful question is not a slogan about the “best” network, but whether the plan can work on the operator that serves the places you will actually visit. Official operator coverage tools are the right place to check city areas and main corridors before you buy.
In Panama City, a data eSIM is most helpful for airport arrival, ride-hailing, hotel check-in and day-to-day navigation. On trips to Colón, the canal area, Chiriquí highlands, Coiba or other island and marine destinations, practical preparation matters more: save offline maps, keep key tickets on the phone and expect the experience to depend on route, stops and whether you are on land or on the water. Opensignal’s Panama reporting is useful as a general snapshot of market experience, but it is not a promise for your exact street or resort.
Useful apps and travel tools
Google Maps ↗
Official Google Maps app and offline map support help with navigation when data is limited or unavailable. [7]
Metro de Panamá Oficial ↗
Official Panama Metro app for service status, card balance and station-related information. [8]
MiBus Maps Panamá ↗
Official bus app for routes, schedules, nearby stops and trip planning in the Panama City system. [9]
Before you buy
Airport and first-hour setup
Install the eSIM before departure if your product allows it, then switch on mobile data after landing. That makes it easier to order a taxi, confirm hotel details and share arrival updates without relying on airport Wi‑Fi. [7] [11]
Use maps and transit apps together
Google Maps offline areas help if coverage dips on road trips, while Metro de Panamá, MiBus Maps and Panapass are useful for moving around the capital and toll corridors. Having both a map app and a local transit app reduces friction when you change from airport transfer to public transport. [7] [8] [9] [10]
What coverage checks can and cannot tell you
A public coverage map is useful for planning, but it is not the same as a measured promise for every street, building or ferry. For traveller decisions, the most practical approach is to check the operator map for your exact route and keep offline navigation ready. [4] [5] [7]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Panama
Will one Panama eSIM suit both the capital and the coast?
It can, but it depends on which network the package uses and where you spend time. City stays in Panama City usually need less planning than coast, island or mountain trips. Check the operator coverage map for the places on your itinerary, then choose the plan that matches those routes rather than assuming all areas behave the same. [1] [4] [5] [11]
Is Panama City the only place where mobile data really matters?
No. Panama City is the easiest place to rely on data, but many travellers also need it for Colón transfers, canal visits, road journeys into Chiriquí and boat days near Coiba or the Gulf of Chiriquí. The main difference is how much you should lean on offline maps and preloaded details once you leave the city. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Should I install the eSIM before arrival?
Yes, if your eSIM product allows installation in advance. That way the phone is ready as soon as you land, and you can turn on the data line after arrival instead of searching for Wi‑Fi. Keep your home SIM separate so you can still receive important calls or SMS on your primary number if needed. [7]
How do I check whether my route has good coverage?
Use the operator’s public coverage map for the road, city or area you plan to visit. That tells you more than a country-wide claim. If your trip includes ferries, islands, highlands or long highway stretches, treat the map as a planning tool and keep offline navigation ready as a fallback. [4] [5] [7] [11]
Which apps are most useful after landing?
Google Maps is useful for navigation and offline areas, while Metro de Panamá Oficial and MiBus Maps help with public transport in the capital. Panapass is handy if you will use toll roads or want account access. These apps reduce friction when you switch between airport transfer, city transport and longer road moves. [7] [8] [9] [10]
