How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Italy
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Current national mobile networks are based on an official AGCOM market list of infrastructured mobile operators in Italy, plus official operator coverage pages. The list is intentionally researched rather than claimed as an exhaustive Letisim inventory.
TIM
TIM lets you check mobile coverage and service availability by area; its coverage pages also note that 4G outdoor coverage is above 99% nationally and that 5G availability depends on device and covered areas. [1] [2]
Check coverage ↗Vodafone Italia
Vodafone provides a public coverage checker for Italian towns and addresses, with separate 2G/4G/5G availability and an outdoor-only coverage note. [1] [3]
Check coverage ↗WINDTRE
WINDTRE’s checker accepts a municipality or address and shows 4G and 5G availability; the operator notes the map is indicative and outdoor-focused. [1] [4]
Check coverage ↗iliad
iliad offers a public coverage map for 2G/3G/4G/5G and states that the outdoor figures are indicative, with indoor reception varying locally. [1] [5]
Check coverage ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

- Rome
- Amalfi Coast
- Cinque Terre
- Alps
Rome
Rome is easiest to manage with live data for metro, buses, tickets and ride-hailing. The city tourism portal highlights public transport, tourist information and shared mobility, so a plan with steady urban data helps more than a package focused only on peak speed. [7]
Amalfi Coast
Along the Amalfi Coast, the practical pattern is moving between trains, ferries and local transfers. Check coverage before relying on navigation for road switches, harbour changes and last-minute schedule updates, especially if your route includes Sorrento, Amalfi or Positano connections. [8]
Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre works well when you combine data with rail planning: Trenitalia explicitly points travellers to rail links and ticket channels for the area. Download schedules and maps in advance so you can move smoothly between stations, villages and ferry departures. [8] [9]
Alps
In the Alps, connectivity is most useful for route changes, weather checks and transport timing rather than for constant heavy use. Save offline maps and accommodation details before leaving the main transport corridor, then treat live data as a convenience layer on top of that. [10]
Italy · eSIM
Why travellers use an eSIM in Italy
Italy is a place where mobile data quickly becomes part of the trip: you may be checking metro directions in Rome, rail changes on the coast, or ferry and station times near the sea. A travel eSIM keeps those basics separate from your home SIM, so you can keep your primary number active while using local data for navigation and booking tools.
Coverage pages from the main operators let you verify service by town, municipality or address, which is the most practical way to compare options before a trip. For longer itineraries, it is smarter to match the plan to the places you will actually visit than to rely on a generic label alone.
Useful apps and travel tools
Trenitalia ↗
Official rail app for tickets, journeys and timetable management across Italy, useful for Rome, the Amalfi Coast rail links and Cinque Terre connections. [8] [9]
Google Maps ↗
Useful for offline navigation when mobile data is patchy or you want to save battery and avoid constant reloading between towns, ports and trailheads. [10]
Before you buy
How Italian routes affect your data use
City stays in Rome are data-hungry because you will likely switch between maps, transit apps, restaurant reservations and taxi apps. Coastal and rail-based trips need less constant use but benefit from preloaded tickets, saved stops and offline maps for the moments between stations, harbours and hotel check-ins. [7] [8] [9] [10]
What to check before you choose a package
Look at whether the operator lets you check coverage by town or address, and compare that with your exact itinerary. If you will mostly stay in one city, a broad national package is usually enough; if you will move across coasts, islands and mountain roads, coverage checks and offline planning matter more than a headline network label. [2] [3] [4] [5]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Italy
Which operators should I compare for Italy?
A practical comparison starts with the main infrastructured mobile operators in Italy: TIM, Vodafone Italia, WINDTRE and iliad. Each publishes its own public coverage tools, and those tools are more useful than a generic promise because they let you check where service is available by town or address. If your trip stays mostly in cities, any of the major networks may be suitable; if you are crossing coasts or mountain routes, check the places on your exact itinerary first. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Can I rely on one coverage map for the whole country?
It is better to treat coverage maps as a planning tool, not as a universal guarantee. The operators’ pages show different technology layers and often note that outdoor reception, indoor reception and local terrain can differ. That means the best way to choose is to compare the towns, districts and addresses you expect to use, then decide whether a national plan or a route-focused setup makes more sense. [2] [3] [4] [5]
Is Rome different from coastal or mountain travel?
Yes. In Rome, live data helps with public transport, tourist services and ride-hailing. On the Amalfi Coast and around Cinque Terre, the connection is often part of a moving itinerary that includes trains, ferries and short transfers, so saved schedules and offline maps are especially useful. In the Alps, data matters most for route changes, weather and timing. The right plan is the one that matches how you travel, not just where you sleep. [7] [8] [9] [10]
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it before you need it, while you still have a stable connection. That makes it easier to scan the QR code, confirm the line is added correctly and keep your home SIM available for calls or SMS if you want to use both. Activation timing depends on the product: some plans start at purchase, some at installation and some at first connection, so the package details matter. [11]
Will my home SIM still work for calls and texts?
Usually yes, if your phone supports dual SIM and you keep your home line enabled. The data eSIM is separate from your primary number, so you can often keep calls and SMS on your home SIM while routing mobile data through the travel eSIM. The only thing to watch is your home carrier’s roaming charges, because those are separate from the eSIM data bundle. [11]
Do I need the internet for navigation if I already have maps saved?
Saved maps help a lot, but live data still adds value for traffic, platform changes, ferry updates, reservation messages and last-minute route changes. Google Maps also supports offline use, so the best setup is usually a mix: download the areas you will visit, then use mobile data for the moments when you need fresh information. [9] [10]
