How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.
Menu names can differ by phone model and system version.
04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Madagascar
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
The current national mobile market is best treated as three operator families reflected in the regulator and operator pages: Orange Madagascar, Airtel Madagascar, and Yas Madagascar, with Telma Mobile appearing in ARTEC’s licence history and numbering plan. ARTEC’s public national cartoréseau is useful for checking where operators show 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G, but it does not guarantee identical performance indoors or on every road section.
Orange Madagascar
Ask Orange Madagascar about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [2] [3] [9] [10]
Official website ↗Airtel Madagascar
Airtel provides a public geolocation and coverage page that is practical to check before buying data for a trip. It is a planning aid rather than a promise of the same indoor signal in every hotel, apartment or transfer point. [2] [3] [5] [6]
Check coverage ↗Yas Madagascar
Yas offers both a public coverage page and a tourist eSIM page for Madagascar. That combination is useful for checking service availability before departure, but it should still be treated as route planning rather than proof of the same signal quality everywhere you stop. [2] [3] [7] [8]
Check coverage ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Madagascar
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Antananarivo and the central highlands
- East coast routes: Toamasina and Andasibe-Mantadia
- North-west coast and Nosy Be
- Southern route: Tôlanaro and Anakao
Antananarivo and the central highlands
The capital is the easiest place to finish eSIM setup, compare operator coverage tools and prepare offline maps before you move on. Use your first data connection for airport pickup, hotel contact and city navigation, then keep the home SIM separate so roaming charges stay distinct from the local plan. [1] [11] [13] [15]
East coast routes: Toamasina and Andasibe-Mantadia
The east coast is a route where transport legs matter as much as the destination. Since the tourism board highlights the east and local flights, it is smart to download maps before leaving Antananarivo and to save bookings locally for city-to-forest or coast-bound transfers. [11] [12] [15]
North-west coast and Nosy Be
Island travel is easiest when maps, hotel details and transfer contacts are already saved on the phone. A working data plan helps with last-minute changes, but screenshots and offline directions remain valuable if you are moving quickly between airport, ferry and resort. [11] [12] [15]
Southern route: Tôlanaro and Anakao
Southbound travel is often about logistics rather than constant city-style connectivity. Download maps, keep key contacts saved locally and expect signal to vary as you move between town, coast and road sections. One data plan is useful for coordination, while offline backups still matter. [13] [15]

What to know before you choose
Madagascar’s current mobile market is best viewed through the regulator and the operator pages together. ARTEC provides a public national cartoréseau, while Orange Madagascar, Airtel Madagascar and Yas Madagascar all publish useful service or coverage pages. That combination helps you check where each network shows 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G, but it does not mean the same experience in every hotel room, harbor, forest lodge or road section.
For most trips, the smart approach is to match your eSIM to the places you actually visit. Antananarivo is the easiest place to finish setup; the east coast often combines city transfers, forest stays and island connections; and the south or northwest can involve more movement between town, road and coast. Keep offline maps ready, and treat coverage checks as route planning rather than a guarantee for every stop.
Useful apps and travel tools
MOBILITY ↗
A local passenger-transport app for Antananarivo and nearby areas. It is useful when you want a city-specific booking option instead of relying only on street taxis. [14]
Google Maps ↗
A dependable offline map fallback for city walks, airport transfers and longer road trips. Download the area before you need it so navigation still works when coverage drops. [15]
Before you buy
Tourism routes combine flights and long road legs
The tourism board describes local flights as a practical way to reach main cities and islands, and presents the east coast as a mix of beaches, forests and island connections. For travellers, that means connectivity planning should follow the transport leg: verify data before the flight, save reservations offline and keep messaging available for arrival transfers. [11] [12]
Antananarivo is the best place to finish setup
The capital is the natural place to confirm an eSIM, compare operator coverage pages and set up offline maps before moving on. ARTEC’s public national map lets you check where 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G appear, but it should still be treated as a planning check rather than a guarantee for every building or road segment. [1] [7] [8] [12] [15]
Arrival logistics make first data use important
Official tourism information points travellers toward pre-trip preparation and arrival procedures, which matters because the first mobile-data use is often at the airport: calling a hotel, showing a transfer voucher or arranging a ride. Keep the eSIM ready before departure, and keep the home SIM separate so roaming charges stay distinct from local data use. [13] [16]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Madagascar
Which mobile networks should I compare before buying an eSIM for Madagascar?
Start with Orange Madagascar, Airtel Madagascar and Yas Madagascar, which are the main networks reflected in the regulator and operator pages. ARTEC also publishes a public national coverage map, so you can compare what each operator shows along your actual route instead of choosing only by brand name. If you plan to move between the capital, the east coast and island transfers, that route check is more useful than a generic country-wide assumption. [1] [2] [3] [5] [7] [8] [9]
Is there a public place to check coverage before I travel?
Yes. ARTEC offers a public cartoréseau that displays 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G coverage by operator. That tool is best used for planning: it helps you see where each network appears on the map, but it does not replace real-world experience inside buildings, in valleys or during moving road transfers. For a traveller, the practical takeaway is to check the places on your itinerary, not just the country name. [1] [4]
Should I rely on one operator for the whole trip?
Not necessarily. Operator pages describe broad service presence, while the regulator’s map shows that coverage varies by area and technology. If your trip is mostly city-based, any of the major networks may be enough; if you are combining Antananarivo with the east coast, islands or longer southern routes, it is safer to pick a plan with flexible setup and to keep offline maps available. The right choice is the one that fits your route, not just the one with the biggest marketing claim. [1] [5] [6] [7] [8] [10] [11] [12]
What should I prepare for arrival in Antananarivo?
Have the eSIM installed or ready to activate before you land, then use the first connection for airport pickup, hotel contact and navigation. The capital is also the easiest place to compare operator coverage pages and to set up offline maps before you move on to the coast or the parks. Keep your home SIM separate so roaming and local data charges stay distinct. [11] [13] [14] [15]
Do I still need offline maps if I have mobile data?
Yes, especially for route changes and long transfers. Google Maps supports offline areas, and that backup is useful in Madagascar because signal can change when you leave the city or move between town, road and coast. Download the areas you need before departure, then keep reservations, hotel details and driver contacts saved locally as well. [11] [12] [15]
Which apps are most practical for getting around?
For Antananarivo, MOBILITY is a local transport-booking app, and Google Maps is the strongest fallback for navigation because it supports offline areas. Together they cover the two most common traveller needs: getting a ride and keeping directions available when coverage is weak or you are between destinations. [14] [15]
