How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in North Macedonia
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Research-based list of the main nationwide mobile networks and one regulator-named operator in the mobile market. AEK market pages and operator pages support A1 and Makedonski Telekom as the long-established nationwide networks; AEK also identifies MTEL in a mobile-market decision. Coverage and technology vary by operator and by route, so travellers should check each operator’s own coverage tools before choosing a plan.
A1 Macedonia
The operator publishes a public 5G coverage page. For trip planning, use the operator’s own coverage information instead of assuming the same service quality everywhere in the country. [5] [6]
Check coverage ↗Makedonski Telekom
The operator provides a public mobile internet coverage map. That is the most useful check for travellers comparing city use, intercity routes and lake or mountain trips. [4] [3]
Check coverage ↗MTEL
Ask MTEL about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [2] [1]
Official website ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Macedonia | 8.1 | 66.3 | 2025-12[7] |
| Makedonski Telekom | 7.2 | 83.3 | 2025-12[7] |
| MTEL | — | — | — |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across North Macedonia
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Skopje
- Ohrid and Lake Ohrid
- Mavrovo and the western mountain corridor
- Prilep and the central inland route
Skopje
Skopje is the easiest place to start because both major networks publish coverage tools and the capital is the country’s main arrival and transit hub. If you will rely on ride-hailing, messaging and navigation on day one, install the eSIM before you land and keep your home SIM available only for any bank or airline texts you still need. [9] [4] [5] [7]
Ohrid and Lake Ohrid
Ohrid is a major tourist area, so it is worth checking the operator map before choosing a plan. A route from the airport, the waterfront and the surrounding hillside neighborhoods can feel very different from one another in practice, so map-based verification matters more than a generic national claim. [8] [4] [5]
Mavrovo and the western mountain corridor
For mountain and park trips, coverage can change quickly with road bends, valleys and time spent away from the main settlements. Download offline maps and save key addresses before leaving Skopje or Ohrid, then treat mobile data as a convenience for messages and traffic rather than something to depend on every minute. [5] [4] [12]
Prilep and the central inland route
If your itinerary connects Skopje, Prilep and other inland stops, compare the operator maps for the exact road corridor you will use. Inland travel is often more about continuity between towns than about the city centre itself, so a plan that works well in one town should still be checked for the road between them. [4] [7] [12]

What to know before you buy
The main practical choice is between the country’s nationwide mobile networks and the exact places you plan to visit. A1 and Makedonski Telekom both publish public coverage tools, which makes it easier to compare city use, lakefront stays and inland drives before you activate a plan.
Opensignal’s December 2025 report gives a useful snapshot of user experience: A1 led Coverage Experience at 8.1 while Makedonski Telekom scored 7.2, and Makedonski Telekom posted higher Download Speed Experience at 83.3 Mbps versus 66.3 Mbps for A1. Those figures are a dated benchmark, not a promise for every street or every trip.
For travellers, the smartest setup is usually a data eSIM for navigation and messaging, while keeping the home SIM available only for important SMS. That way, you can avoid roaming surprises on your main number and still use local data where it matters most.
Useful apps and travel tools
A1 Guru ↗
A1’s official support portal and virtual assistant for account and service questions. It is useful for checking how the operator handles service help, settings and account support before or during a trip. [10] [5]
Google Maps ↗
Google Maps supports downloading areas for offline navigation, which is practical for city sightseeing, road trips and lake or mountain segments when mobile data is weaker. [12]
Before you buy
Check the operator map before buying
North Macedonia is compact enough that many travellers assume any plan will behave the same everywhere, but the useful choice depends on where you will actually spend time. The public coverage pages from A1 and Makedonski Telekom are the right starting point because they show how each network presents its own service areas and technology mix. [4] [5] [7]
Keep home SIM alerts separate from data eSIM
A travel eSIM is most useful for maps, taxi apps and messaging, while your home SIM may still be needed for one-time passwords, airline notices or banking alerts. Keeping them separate helps you avoid surprise charges on the home line while still staying reachable for important texts. [11] [10]
Plan for mountains and lakes, not just cities
Ohrid, Skopje and the western mountain areas can all be part of one trip, but the same plan may feel different in a lakeside town, a dense city centre and a road through hills. Offline maps, downloaded reservations and saved addresses make the trip smoother when the signal is weaker or less predictable. [8] [9] [4] [12]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in North Macedonia
Which network should I compare first for a trip to North Macedonia?
Start with the operator whose coverage tool matches your itinerary. A1 and Makedonski Telekom both publish public coverage pages, so you can compare the areas you will actually use: central Skopje, the Ohrid lake area, and any inland or mountain drives. If your stay is mostly in the capital, either may work well enough; if you will be moving between towns, the road corridor matters as much as the city itself. Opensignal’s December 2025 report is useful as a broad benchmark, but it should not replace checking the route you will use. [4] [5] [7] [9] [8]
Is one operator clearly best for the whole country?
Not in a way that is safe to promise for every traveller. The available primary sources show different strengths in different measures: in Opensignal’s December 2025 report, A1 led Coverage Experience, while Makedonski Telekom led Download Speed Experience. That means the better choice depends on whether you care more about perceived reach or about speed. For a tourist, the real answer is usually the one that matches your plan, hotel location and daily movement pattern. [7]
Can I rely on mobile data for lake trips and mountain routes?
Yes, but only if you prepare for places where service can change as you move. Ohrid and the lake area are major tourist zones, yet the practical experience still depends on the exact neighborhood, waterfront section or road you take. In mountain and park areas, download offline maps before departure and keep key addresses saved locally. That approach makes your trip much less dependent on live signal quality when you are between settlements or away from main roads. [8] [4] [5] [12]
Should I keep my home SIM active as well?
Usually yes, but for a different purpose. Keep the home SIM available for bank codes, airline notifications and other important texts, while letting the North Macedonia eSIM handle data for maps, rides and messenger apps. This avoids mixing roaming charges with your travel data use. If your phone supports dual SIM management, it is easy to keep the two roles separate and switch off voice or data roaming on the home line if you do not need it. [11] [10]
What is the safest way to install before arrival?
Install the eSIM profile before you travel if your device allows it, but wait until you have the right plan and know which line should provide data. The official operator pages are helpful because they show how their service is accessed and where their coverage information lives. On arrival, make sure mobile data is assigned to the travel eSIM, roaming is configured the way you want, and bank alerts on the home number are not disrupted by mistake. [11] [10] [4]
