How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Google Pixel / Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → new eSIM → Edit name
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → new eSIM → Name
Huawei: SIM management → SIM 2 → your eSIM → Card name. You can keep the existing label if no rename option is shown.
Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.
Line name: Letisim Portugal

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Portugal
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
ANACOM’s GEO.ANACOM platform states that coverage can be checked for DIGI, MEO, NOS and Vodafone anywhere in Portugal. This is the current national-network list used here; it does not imply every Letisim package includes every operator.

| NOS | — | 53.8 | 2023-01[6] |
| Vodafone | — | 36.2 | 2023-01[6] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Portugal
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Lisbon
- Coimbra and Central Portugal
- Douro Valley and Alto Douro
- Madeira
Lisbon
In the capital area, plan for heavy daytime use around downtown, Belém and the riverfront, then check the operator’s coverage tool if you will be moving between central streets, the airport area and the coast toward Cascais. [1] [7]
Coimbra and Central Portugal
For Coimbra, combine city use with trip planning for rail segments and surrounding wine-country roads; coverage can change more noticeably once you leave the main urban area, so downloading maps and tickets in advance is practical. [9] [10] [12]
Douro Valley and Alto Douro
The Douro is best treated as a route rather than a single town stop: road, train and boat days can all involve gaps between settlements, so keep offline navigation ready and do not rely on a single signal check from one location. [8] [9] [12]
Madeira
On Madeira, a mobile plan is useful for city use in Funchal and for roadside navigation on island drives, but the practical rule is still to check coverage where you will actually spend time rather than assuming one view fits the whole island. [11] [1]

What to expect from mobile data in Portugal
ANACOM’s GEO.ANACOM platform currently lists DIGI, MEO, NOS and Vodafone as the national mobile networks whose coverage can be checked publicly. For a traveller, the most useful habit is to test the exact hotel, station, marina or road segment you care about instead of relying on a country-wide impression.
Opensignal’s Portugal report from January 2023 shows the main networks can differ meaningfully in real-world download speed experience, which is helpful when comparing plans, but it should be treated as a dated benchmark rather than a promise for a specific place in 2026. For day-to-day travel, the practical question is whether your plan gives you comfortable data for navigation, ride-hailing, messages and occasional uploads in the places you will actually visit.
Useful apps and travel tools

Before you buy
When to check coverage before you travel
Portugal has four current national mobile networks in ANACOM’s public coverage platform: DIGI, MEO, NOS and Vodafone. The useful step for a traveller is to check the operator’s public coverage tool for the exact address, road or area you care about, because general national statements do not tell you how one hotel, station or village will perform. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
What the measurement numbers do and do not mean
Opensignal’s Portugal report provides a dated, real-world comparison of average download speed experience across the major networks. It is useful for broad planning, but it is not a guarantee for a specific street, resort or motorway segment in 2026. [6]
Rail and city apps that help on the ground
For rail travel, the CP app lets you check timetables and buy tickets, including urban trains in Coimbra and Porto. In Lisbon, CARRISway shows buses and trams in real time and helps load transport passes from the phone. [12] [13]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Portugal
Which mobile networks can I check before buying an eSIM for Portugal?
Portugal’s current public coverage platform from ANACOM includes DIGI, MEO, NOS and Vodafone. That gives you a realistic way to compare the main networks before you choose a plan. The best next step is to open the operator’s own coverage page for the exact area you expect to use most, because a general national overview is less useful than checking the street, hotel or route you actually need. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Is one network always the best choice for Lisbon?
No single network should be assumed to be the best everywhere in Lisbon. Central districts, the riverfront, the airport area and nearby coastal trips can all behave differently. A traveller usually gets a better result by checking coverage for the exact addresses on the itinerary and choosing a plan that works comfortably where most of the trip happens. [1] [7]
What should I do if I am travelling beyond the big cities?
For routes such as Coimbra to the Douro, or island drives on Madeira, it is sensible to download offline maps, save tickets and keep key addresses available before leaving the hotel. That way you are not depending on live data at every point in the journey, especially when the route includes roads, rail lines or scenic stops between larger settlements. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]
Can I compare plans using the OpenSignal numbers?
Yes, but only as one part of the decision. Opensignal’s January 2023 Portugal report gives a dated view of average download speed experience across the major networks, which is useful for broad comparison. It should not be treated as a guarantee for a specific neighbourhood, and it is not a substitute for checking the exact coverage page for your destination. [6]
Which apps are most useful after landing?
For rail travel, the CP app is useful for schedules and ticket purchase, including Coimbra urban trains. In Lisbon, CARRISway helps with buses and trams in real time and lets you load a pass from your phone. Those two apps cover a lot of the practical movement a visitor typically needs at the start of a trip. [12] [13]
