How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Sweden
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Sweden’s current national mobile network list is based on the regulator’s market information and the four nationwide networks reviewed by Opensignal: Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre. Public operator coverage tools help travellers compare estimated service by address or area, but they do not guarantee a signal at every spot.

Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Stockholm

- High Coast

Stockholm
For the capital, an eSIM is most useful for navigation, transit tickets and ride-hailing between the airport, the city center and the archipelago ferries. Check the operator map by hotel or address if you will stay on the outskirts, because indoor reception and block-by-block differences matter more than the city name alone. [8] [9] [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Gothenburg
In western Sweden, this is a practical city for using local transport apps and for checking signal around hotels, trams and coastal departures. If you plan to move between central streets, ferry terminals and the wider metro area, verify the coverage map for the exact address rather than assuming the same result everywhere in the region. [8] [10] [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]
High Coast
Along the coast and nature routes, prepare before setting out: coverage can change with terrain, distance between settlements and indoor use at cabins or visitor facilities. Download offline maps and any tickets in advance, then use the operator coverage tool to check the places where you will actually stop. [8] [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Laponian National Park
For long nature trips in the far north, plan as if coverage may be intermittent rather than continuous, especially on hikes, boat legs or road stretches between settlements. An eSIM is still valuable for map checks and messaging, but offline maps, cached reservations and a power bank are the practical backup. [8] [1] [3] [4] [5] [6]

What to know before you connect
Sweden’s mobile market is built around four nationwide networks: Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre. For travellers, the useful question is not just which brands exist, but which operator map gives the best check for the exact hotel, station, ferry terminal or cabin you will use. Public coverage tools are available from each operator, and they are designed to show estimated service rather than a guarantee for every street or room.
Older devices deserve a quick compatibility check before travel because Sweden’s major operators have moved past 3G and, for some networks, 2G as well. That matters for phones, wearables and trackers that may still work at home but struggle once they need modern 4G or 5G voice and data support. If you are flying in with a recent phone, the main benefit of an eSIM is simple: you can land ready to open maps, call a car, and buy transport tickets without hunting for Wi-Fi first.

Before you buy
2G and 3G shutdowns can affect older devices
Sweden’s major operators have moved beyond 3G, and Tele2 and Telenor also shut down 2G in 2025; Telia plans to keep 2G until the end of 2027. Travelers with older phones, watches or trackers should confirm that their device supports modern 4G or 5G voice and data before arrival. [1] [2] [4] [5]
Public coverage maps are estimates, not guarantees
All four operators provide coverage tools, but they are only guidance because terrain, buildings, crowds and device type can change the real result. For a trip, the most useful check is the exact hotel, apartment, station or ferry terminal address. [3] [4] [5] [6]
City trips and nature trips need different preparation
In Stockholm and Gothenburg, an eSIM usually helps most with transit, rides and bookings. In northern and coastal areas, offline maps and saved reservations matter more because you may move through places where the signal changes quickly. [8] [9] [10] [3] [4] [5] [6]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Sweden
Which mobile networks should I compare for Sweden?
For a normal nationwide comparison, start with the four main networks: Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre. Each publishes its own public coverage map, so the best choice depends on the exact places you will use most, not on the country name alone. A city hotel, airport transfer and northern road trip can point you toward different maps even within one trip. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Will an eSIM help most in Stockholm and Gothenburg?
Yes, especially if you want immediate data for maps, ride-hailing and public transport apps. In both cities, an eSIM is usually most convenient when you are moving between hotels, stations and attractions and do not want to rely on café Wi-Fi. For the exact answer, still check the operator map for your accommodation address because indoor reception can vary. [3] [4] [5] [6] [9] [10]
What should I do if I am travelling to the coast or the north?
Treat those trips as route-based planning rather than city-only planning. Download offline maps, keep tickets and bookings saved on your phone, and check the operator’s public map for the stops you will actually use. That approach is more reliable than assuming one city-level result will cover ferries, cabins, hiking trails or long road stretches. [3] [4] [5] [6] [8]
Do I need a newer phone for Sweden?
If your phone is recent, you are usually fine. If it is older, check whether it supports modern 4G and 5G voice and data, because Sweden has already shut down 3G and some operators have also ended 2G. That is especially important for travellers using older handsets, watches, alarm devices or trackers. [1] [2] [4] [5]
Can I rely on public coverage maps when choosing a plan?
You can use them as the best public starting point, but not as a promise of a signal in every place. The maps are useful for comparing coverage around a specific address, while your actual experience will still depend on building materials, terrain, crowding and the device you bring. For a trip, compare the places you will stay and the routes you will use most often. [3] [4] [5] [6]
