How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.
OnePlus: Open the installed eSIM and edit its name if the option is available.
Line name: Letisim Timor-Leste

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Timor-Leste
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
The national regulator lists three operational mobile network operators in Timor-Leste: Timor Telecom, Telkomcel and Telemor. This page focuses on those national mobile networks that matter most for traveller connectivity checks; coverage and service details can still vary by location, device and plan.
Timor Telecom
Ask Timor Telecom about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [2] [3]
Official website ↗Telkomcel
Telkomcel provides a public coverage checker, which is useful when you want to test a hotel, airport area, road segment or other exact stop on your itinerary before deciding on a plan. [1] [4]
Check coverage ↗Telemor
Ask Telemor about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [5]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Timor-Leste
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Dili
- Ataúro Island
- Lautém, Tutuala and Jaco Island
- Oecusse enclave
Dili
Dili is the easiest place to compare operators, activate a plan and sort out device settings before side trips. It is also the best base for checking whether you need data only or a local number for calls and bookings. [1] [2] [6] [7] [10]
Ataúro Island
Treat an island day trip as a separate connectivity check. If you rely on maps, messaging or a pickup back to the port, confirm service in Dili first and keep offline maps ready for the crossing and the return. [6] [8] [10]
Lautém, Tutuala and Jaco Island
For the eastern side of the country, plan around the exact stops rather than the distance from the capital. The tourism portal separates Jaco Island and eastern destinations as distinct travel areas, so it is sensible to download navigation and keep a backup data allowance for the road. [6] [8] [10]
Oecusse enclave
Oecusse is a separate planning case because it is an enclave. Compare plans before travel, keep enough data for maps and messages, and do not assume the same day-to-day setup you would use in Dili. [6] [8] [10]

Overview
Timor-Leste has a small but clearly defined mobile market, and the national regulator lists three operational mobile operators: Timor Telecom, Telkomcel and Telemor. That gives travellers a real choice, but the best option still depends on where you will use the phone, whether your device supports eSIM, and whether you need a data-only plan or a local number. Timor Telecom’s official pages highlight eSIM service, while Telkomcel offers a public coverage checker that is useful when your itinerary includes specific hotels, roads or arrival points.
The smartest way to choose here is to match the plan to the route, not just to the length of the trip. Dili is the easiest place to compare options and get set up. Ataúro is worth treating as its own check before leaving the capital. The eastern side of the country, including Lautém, Tutuala and Jaco Island, is better handled with offline maps and a realistic data budget. Oecusse also needs separate planning because it is an enclave, so the logistics and your daily connectivity pattern may differ from mainland travel. In practice, checking the exact places you will visit is more useful than assuming the same experience everywhere.
Useful apps and travel tools
Google Maps ↗
Useful for turn-by-turn navigation, place search and route comparison. It also supports offline areas, which helps if you move beyond central Dili or want a backup when mobile data is uneven. [10] [6] [7] [8]
Before you buy
What matters most when choosing a plan
The practical checklist is simple: confirm that your phone supports eSIM, decide whether you need data only or a local number, and check whether the operator has a public tool for the places on your route. In Timor-Leste, that matters more than making assumptions about the whole country from one city stay. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [10]
Offline maps still help
Timor-Leste’s tourism portal highlights Dili, Ataúro, Jaco Island, Lautém and Oecusse as distinct destinations, which is a good reminder to keep offline maps on the phone before day trips or long drives. If coverage changes outside the city, you will still have navigation and place search ready. [6] [8] [10]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Timor-Leste
Which mobile networks can a traveller use in Timor-Leste?
The communications regulator lists three operational mobile operators: Timor Telecom, Telkomcel and Telemor. For a visitor, the useful question is not which brand sounds familiar, but which network fits the places on your itinerary. Dili is the simplest place to compare options, while more specific route checks matter if you will depend on maps, ride-hailing or work messages outside the capital. [1] [2] [4] [5] [7]
Should I choose an eSIM or a physical SIM?
If your phone supports eSIM, it is often the most convenient option because you can install it before or during the trip and keep your home SIM available for important messages. A physical SIM can still make sense if your device is older or you prefer to handle everything in a store. The key is to separate data usage from home-SIM charges so you know which line is handling which service. [2] [3] [5] [10]
Can I check coverage for a specific town or road?
Yes, at least with some operators. Telkomcel offers a public coverage checker, which is useful if you want to look up an exact hotel, airport area or road segment before buying. That is more reliable for trip planning than assuming one city experience applies everywhere else in the country. [4] [6] [10]
Will one plan be enough for Dili and an island trip?
Sometimes, but it depends on how you use the phone. If you mainly need messaging, maps and occasional bookings, a moderate allowance may be enough for Dili plus a short side trip. If you navigate a lot, share photos, or use transport apps, choose a larger allowance or a plan you can top up easily. For Ataúro, Lautém or Oecusse, it is wise to keep a buffer rather than assume city-style usage. [6] [8] [10]
Do I need a local number, or is data only enough?
Many travellers only need data for navigation, hotel communication and messaging, so a data-only eSIM can be enough. If you expect to receive calls, make bookings by phone or use services that require a Timorese number, a local-number plan may be more practical. The right choice depends on how you travel, not just on how long you stay. [2] [3] [5]
What should I do before driving outside the capital?
Download offline maps, confirm the places on your route and make sure the plan has enough data for navigation and messages. The tourism portal treats Dili, Ataúro, Lautém, Jaco Island and Oecusse as distinct travel areas, which is a good reminder to plan connectivity by route. If you are leaving the city for a full day or more, set up the eSIM before departure so you are not troubleshooting on the road. [6] [7] [8] [10]
