How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Uruguay
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
URSEC maintains regulated operator lists, and Opensignal’s Uruguay reports analyze Antel, Claro and Movistar as the national mobile networks. This page uses that market scope for traveller guidance rather than implying package inclusion.
Antel
Antel provides a public mobile coverage map with technology layers such as LTE and 5G. The map is indicative, so travellers should use it as a planning tool and still expect local variation. [1] [2] [3]
Check coverage ↗Claro
Claro offers a public coverage map for mobile service. It is useful for checking where signal is expected before heading outside the main urban areas. [1] [2] [4]
Check coverage ↗Movistar
Movistar’s public 4G LTE coverage map is labelled as indicative. For travellers, it is best used to confirm whether a planned route or district is within stated 4G service areas. [1] [2] [5]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antel | 9.3 | — | 2023-11[2] |
| Claro | — | — | — |

Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Uruguay
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Montevideo
- Punta del Este and the east coast
- Rocha coast: Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo and Santa Teresa
- Salto and the north-west
Montevideo
In the capital, a local eSIM is useful for ride-hailing, maps and messaging from the moment you leave the airport or port. Before buying, check each operator’s urban coverage map for your hotel district and the routes you expect to use most, because service quality can differ by street-level conditions. [3] [4] [5] [7]
Punta del Este and the east coast
For the resort coast, plan for a mix of seaside towns, highway stretches and quieter inland links. A good setup is to install the eSIM before departure, save offline maps, and keep your home SIM available for backup if you need to compare coverage while moving between districts. [3] [4] [6]
Rocha coast: Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo and Santa Teresa
On this stretch, connectivity planning matters more than trying to guess a single winner. Check the operator maps before the trip, download maps for the exact area you will visit, and expect that the most practical setup is one that works well in towns, on access roads and at your overnight base. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Salto and the north-west
If your route includes inland travel and longer road legs, test coverage by corridor rather than by city name alone. That helps you choose a plan that stays practical for navigation, transfers and everyday data use while you move between towns. [3] [4] [5]

Overview
Uruguay’s mobile market is compact enough to compare, but still worth checking carefully before you buy. URSEC’s operator listings and Opensignal’s Uruguay market report show the national mobile networks used in traveller planning as Antel, Claro and Movistar, so you can focus on the networks that matter most for coverage and day-to-day usability.
For travellers, the best choice is usually the plan that matches where you will spend the most time. Antel, Claro and Movistar all provide public coverage tools, which lets you compare the expected service in city districts, coastal resorts and longer road routes. The maps are helpful for planning, but they are only indicative; the real benefit is knowing in advance whether your hotel area, transfer route or day trip looks sensible for mobile data.
Useful apps and travel tools
Google Maps ↗
Useful for turn-by-turn navigation, saved places and offline areas across Uruguay. Download the exact city or route area before travel if you expect weak signal on coastal or rural legs. [6] [9]
Before you buy
What the coverage maps can and cannot tell you
The public maps from the operators are useful for planning, but they are not a promise that every block or beach access point will feel the same. The practical takeaway for travellers is to compare the map with the route you actually expect to use, especially if you will move between city streets, coastal roads and quieter rural stretches. [3] [4] [5]
Offline maps are a sensible backup
Google Maps lets you download areas for offline use, which is helpful if you are driving, visiting coastal areas or simply want navigation to keep working when signal dips. Public help pages also note that offline maps are not available everywhere and that some live features are unavailable offline, so downloading the exact area before leaving is the safest approach. [6] [9]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Uruguay
Which mobile networks should I compare before buying an eSIM for Uruguay?
The main national networks to compare are Antel, Claro and Movistar. They are the operators travellers most often check against public coverage maps, which is useful because signal can vary between central Montevideo, coastal towns and longer inland routes. Choosing between them is less about a universal winner and more about matching the network to the places you plan to spend time in. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Is one operator clearly best everywhere in Uruguay?
Not everywhere. Opensignal’s Uruguay reporting gives Antel a very strong coverage experience result, but that does not mean every traveller will prefer it for every route or district. For a practical decision, compare each operator’s public map with your hotel, airport transfer and any side trips you have planned, then choose the plan that looks most consistent for the places you will actually use. [2] [3] [4] [5]
Should I rely on mobile data alone for coastal trips?
It is better to keep a backup plan. Coastal routes and quieter access roads are exactly where travellers benefit from preloaded offline maps, because navigation is often the first thing you need if the signal drops. Mobile data still matters for messaging and ride apps, but downloading the area in advance makes the trip much smoother. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Can I check coverage before I arrive in Uruguay?
Yes. Antel, Claro and Movistar each offer public coverage tools, and those are the right place to check the districts or routes you care about. The maps are intended as planning aids, so use them to compare signal expectations before you buy or activate a plan, especially if you are splitting your time between Montevideo and the coast. [3] [4] [5]
What is the easiest setup for a short visit?
For a short visit, the easiest setup is usually to install the eSIM before departure, keep your home SIM active for calls or SMS if needed, and use the travel eSIM for data once you land. That gives you immediate internet access for maps and transport without having to depend on airport Wi-Fi or a local shop visit. [6]
