How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in The Gambia
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Primary regulator sources identify four mobile network operators in The Gambia: GAMCEL, Africell, Comium and QCell. Comium is included in the current market list even though this page set does not provide a current official coverage page for it.
Africell
If your eSIM package lists Africell, ask the operator about coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Its official website is the starting point for current network information. [1] [5] [6]
Official website ↗QCell
Check your accommodation area and trip stops with the QCell coverage tool. The network must be included in your chosen eSIM package. [1] [7] [8] [12]
Check coverage ↗GAMCEL
If your eSIM package lists GAMCEL, ask the operator about coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Its official website is the starting point for current network information. [1] [9]
Official website ↗Comium
If your eSIM package lists Comium, ask the operator about coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Its official website is the starting point for current network information. [1]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across The Gambia
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Greater Banjul and the coast
- Senegambia, Kotu and Bijilo
- Brikama and Yundum corridor
- River Gambia east to Janjanbureh
Greater Banjul and the coast
For Banjul, Serekunda and the airport side of the coast, a tourist SIM is usually about convenience: map apps, ride-hailing, messaging and hotel check-ins. If you plan to move between Banjul, Serekunda and the beach strip, choose a plan with enough room for navigation and social sharing rather than assuming a tiny starter bundle will last the whole stay. [3] [4] [7] [8]
Senegambia, Kotu and Bijilo
This is the most practical resort corridor for people who want easy internet access for beach days, restaurants and excursions. QCell publicly lists several 5G locations in this corridor, while Africell lists outlets around Senegambia, Kairaba Avenue, Brusubi and nearby resort areas; if you care about staying online while moving around the tourist strip, compare both operators’ service pages before buying. [3] [5] [7]
Brikama and Yundum corridor
This route matters if you are coming from the airport, staying west of the city or taking day trips inland. QCell’s public 5G location list includes Brikama and Yundum, so travellers who expect to rely on mobile data along this corridor should verify the package type and device compatibility before arrival. [3] [7]
River Gambia east to Janjanbureh
For river journeys and inland stays, coverage can feel more variable than on the coast, so the safest plan is to download offline maps, tickets and hotel details before departure and keep your main navigation app cached. The tourism site points to river camps outside the coastal resort belt, which is a useful reminder to treat this as a route where preparation matters more than location-based assumptions. [3] [4]

What to know before you choose
The Gambia’s mobile market is small and easy to compare, but the useful choice still depends on where you will spend time. The regulator identifies four mobile operators in the country: GAMCEL, Africell, Comium and QCell. For a traveller, that means the main job is to match your route and phone with the operator pages you can actually verify before departure, rather than assuming every package behaves the same everywhere.
Most visitor movement happens along the coastal strip around Banjul, Serekunda and the resort belt, while river and inland stays are more route-dependent. Government tourism material describes five main resort areas on the Atlantic coast and also points to camps on the River Gambia, so a practical data plan should cover navigation, messaging and ride-hailing on the coast and leave room for offline maps or a larger allowance on river trips.
Useful apps and travel tools
Visit Gambia ↗
Official government travel app for tourism and visitor information in The Gambia. Useful for checking destination basics before and during the trip. [10] [3]
My Africell GM ↗
Africell’s self-care app for account and service management. Handy if you choose Africell and want to manage bundles or account tools from the phone. [5] [11]
QCell Mobile App ↗
QCell’s all-in-one app for mobile services, bundles and account actions. Useful for travellers who buy from QCell and want a local operator app for top-ups and bundle control. [7] [12]
Before you buy
Tourist areas are concentrated along the coast
Government tourism material describes five main resort areas on the palm-fringed Atlantic coast and also notes river camps farther inland. For a traveller, that means the busiest data use is usually in the coastal strip, while river and inland trips benefit more from offline preparation and a larger allowance for maps and messaging. [3] [4]
Public operator list includes four mobile networks
The regulator identifies GAMCEL, Africell, Comium and QCell as the country’s mobile operators. That helps with plan comparison, because the choice is not just about data volume; it is also about which network and service page you can verify before you travel. [1] [2]
QCell publishes current 5G locations
QCell’s public 5G page lists specific places including Brikama, Yundum, Senegambia, Kairaba Avenue, Fajara and Banjul. Travellers can use that as a practical check for where the operator says its 5G service is available, but it is still a service claim rather than a measured promise. [7] [8]
Africell and QCell both expose useful self-service pages
Africell publishes data bundle, roaming and app pages, while QCell publishes broadband, 5G and app pages. That matters for setup and top-up planning: you can check how the operator expects customers to manage bundles before you land, even if the exact package you buy is chosen separately on the product screen. [5] [6] [7] [8] [11] [12]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in The Gambia
Which network should I choose for a short trip?
Start with the route, not the brand. If you stay mostly in Banjul, Serekunda or the main resort strip, any current operator page can be a reasonable starting point. If your trip includes Brikama, Yundum or a coastal-to-inland drive, compare the service pages for Africell and QCell first, because both publish public pages that help you verify where they say service is available. For river travel, keep the plan focused on maps and messaging rather than expecting a uniform city-style experience everywhere. [1] [5] [7] [8] [3]
Is one small bundle enough for the whole country?
Usually not if you expect to use maps, ride-hailing, hotel messaging and photo sharing every day. The coastal strip around the main resort areas is where travellers tend to use data most actively, and river journeys often add offline navigation needs. A better approach is to choose a plan that leaves headroom for route changes and day trips, then keep offline maps saved before you leave Wi-Fi. [3] [4]
Can I check coverage before I buy?
Yes, but the type of check matters. QCell’s public 5G page lists specific locations, which is useful for seeing where that operator says its 5G service is available. Africell, meanwhile, publishes service and app pages that are useful for account planning. What you should not do is treat a service page as a measured promise for every street or village; it is a practical reference, not a guarantee. [5] [6] [7] [8]
Will my eSIM replace my home SIM?
No. An eSIM for data should be treated separately from your home SIM charges. Keep your home SIM available only if you need calls, bank messages or other services on your usual number, and use the travel eSIM for mobile data. That way you can avoid confusing roaming charges with the plan you bought for internet access. [5] [11] [12]
What should I prepare for inland or river trips?
Download offline maps, hotel addresses and key booking details before you head out, especially if your itinerary includes the River Gambia or a day away from the main coastal corridor. Tourism sources describe these inland and river areas as part of the visitor experience, but the safe traveller move is to be self-sufficient with navigation and reservations rather than waiting to sort everything on the road. [3] [4]
Which apps are useful after landing?
The most useful official apps here are Visit Gambia for destination information, My Africell GM if you choose Africell, and the QCell Mobile App if you choose QCell. They help with practical things like checking services, bundle management and visitor information without forcing you to search from scratch on mobile data. [10] [11] [12]
