How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

On iOS 26, a Turn On Travel eSIM notification may appear after arrival. Choose the travel line for data and check whether you also want to keep your home line active. If no notification appears, use the manual steps below.
Check when your package starts: at payment, installation or first connection. If it starts on installation, install nearer your trip. Installing later does not postpone a package that started at payment.
These screens show settings on the models named below. Your operator and eSIM labels will differ. Screens retain the source language; each caption translates and identifies the control to use. Tap any image for a closer look.

Honor: SIM management → SIM 2 → eSIM name. Rename it if your MagicOS version offers this option.
Xiaomi / Redmi: Manage eSIM → your plan → Change nickname, if available.
Motorola: Open the new eSIM in SIM settings and use the edit-name option if available.
OPPO: Open the installed profile in eSIM settings and change its label if your ColorOS version allows it.

No second screen for your QR code?
If the scanner has a gallery button, save the QR from your order and choose that image. If your order includes manual installation details, choose Enter details manually and copy the fields exactly. The available methods depend on your phone and eSIM. If neither is available, contact support; do not scan a sample code from this guide or delete an installed eSIM.

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Malta
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
The current national mobile networks are the operators listed in Malta Communications Authority spectrum licensing records. Travellers can check operator coverage on the public tools below, but signal indoors, in narrow streets, on ferries and on specific devices can differ from broad map claims.
GO
Ask GO about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [2] [3]
Official website ↗Epic
Epic provides a public coverage map for the Maltese Islands and presents it as a way to check service areas before travel. [1] [4] [5]
Check coverage ↗Melita
Ask Melita about mobile coverage at your accommodation and along your route. Check the network listed in the eSIM package before purchase. [1] [6] [7]
Official website ↗The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.

- Blue Grotto and the south coast
- Gozo and Comino
Valletta
In the capital, mobile data is most useful for walking between sights, checking ferry and bus timings, and using maps in dense streets where public Wi‑Fi may not be convenient. The official transport app and route planner are practical if you plan to move between Valletta, Sliema and the harbour area. [8] [9] [13] [14]
Mellieħa and Għajn Tuffieħa coast
For the north-west coast, it helps to have data ready before arrival if you want navigation, taxi pickup points and messaging to work immediately after landing. Beach days and hotel transfers are easier when the plan is already active instead of searching for a local SIM after check-in. [8] [10] [11]
Blue Grotto and the south coast
This area is practical for live route checks, boat departure updates and sharing photos without relying on café Wi‑Fi. If you combine the cave area with nearby heritage stops, keep offline maps as a backup and use mobile data for the live part of the day. [8] [9] [11]
Gozo and Comino
These islands are best treated as a full-day connectivity route, because ferry times, meeting points, beaches and villages can all come into one itinerary. VisitMalta highlights Gozo and Comino as key day-trip areas, so keeping a data plan active from the start is the simplest way to manage directions and timing. [8] [10] [11] [14]
Malta · eSIM
Why a Malta eSIM helps
A Malta eSIM is useful when you want data as soon as you land, especially for navigation, ride-hailing, ferry checks and messaging. The country is compact, but a normal day can still include city streets, beaches, ferry terminals and island transfers, so having mobile data ready before you start moving makes travel smoother.
Malta’s public spectrum records list three national mobile operators: GO, Epic and Melita. Operators publish their own service information, and Epic also provides a public coverage map. Those tools help you judge whether a place or route is a good fit, but they do not replace real-world experience, which can vary by building, device and time of day.
Useful apps and travel tools
VisitMalta+ ↗
Official tourism app with attractions, maps, events, transport ideas and offline use across the Maltese Islands. [12]
tallinja app ↗

Before you buy
Use the official bus tools for route planning
The tallinja app and Journey Planner are the most useful official tools for buses across Malta and Gozo. They cover route ideas, live updates, stop information and service alerts, which is especially helpful when you are moving between the capital, beaches and ferry connections. [13] [14] [9]
Keep an offline map for historic streets and beach routes
VisitMalta’s maps and the VisitMalta+ app can help you find sights, but an offline map is still useful if you expect long walks through historic streets, coastal paths or day-trip areas where you do not want to depend on constant signal. [11] [12] [8]
Island-hopping is easier with data active before departure
Because Gozo and Comino are often combined with mainland sightseeing, it is easier to activate your eSIM before boarding and then use it for ferry timing, meeting points and navigation on arrival. [10] [11] [14]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Malta
Which mobile operators should I compare for Malta?
The public record shows three national mobile operators: GO, Epic and Melita. For a traveller, the practical difference is not just the brand name but where you can verify coverage and how each provider presents its maps, service notes and network details. Epic publishes a public coverage map, while GO and Melita publish service information on their sites. That makes it worth comparing the operator pages for the areas you will actually visit, rather than choosing by label alone. [1] [2] [4] [6]
How can I check whether a place in Malta is likely to have good signal?
Start with the operator’s public coverage page or service information, then compare it with your itinerary. A map can help you judge broad outdoor coverage, but it cannot promise the same result indoors, in dense streets or on every device. If you are staying mostly in Valletta, moving through beach areas or visiting Gozo and Comino, look at the operator information for those routes and keep an offline map as backup. [4] [5] [9] [11]
Do I need a data eSIM for Malta if my hotel has Wi‑Fi?
Hotel Wi‑Fi is useful, but a data eSIM is still the easier option for the first hours after arrival and for travel days away from the room. You may want live maps, ferry times, taxi pickup points, ticket checks and message apps while walking, on the bus or at the beach. A travel data plan also keeps your home SIM charges separate from your trip usage. [9] [13] [14] [2]
What is the best way to get around Malta on mobile data?
For buses, use the official tallinja app or Journey Planner from Malta Public Transport. They provide route suggestions, live updates and alerts, which is especially helpful if you are moving between Valletta, the coast and ferry connections. VisitMalta’s tourism pages and VisitMalta+ app are also useful for planning stops and saving maps in advance. [13] [14] [12] [11]
Should I install the eSIM before arrival or after landing?
Installing before arrival is usually the simplest option, because you can scan the QR code, confirm the plan and then switch data on when you need it. That helps if you want maps or messaging right after landing or before boarding a ferry. Exact validity rules depend on the product, so use the package information for activation timing rather than assuming every plan starts in the same way. [2] [3]
Is one Malta data plan enough for island trips?
For most city breaks and day trips, one plan is enough if you mainly use maps, messaging, ride-hailing and light browsing. If you expect long days outdoors, ferry hopping or frequent video use, compare the operator options and think about your data volume rather than just the headline bundle name. The most useful choice is the one that fits your route and how often you will be online, not a claim that one network is universally perfect everywhere. [10] [11] [13] [14]
