How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in the Netherlands
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
This page covers the three nationwide mobile network operators identified by the Dutch regulator. Travellers can still compare each operator’s own coverage checker for the addresses and routes that matter to them.
KPN
KPN’s coverage map lets you check 2G, 4G and 5G by postcode and house number; it also shows average and maximum speeds for the selected network type. [1] [9] [10] [11] [2]
Check coverage ↗Odido
Odido’s public coverage portal is useful for checking mobile coverage and network incidents. It is most practical for confirming where 4G or 5G should be available on your trip. [1] [12] [13] [14] [2]
Check coverage ↗Vodafone
Vodafone’s public coverage page can help you check signal quality and local disruptions. As always, the result depends on the device, building type and exact place you are standing. [1] [15] [16] [17] [2]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| KPN | 9.4 | 101.2 | 2026-03[2] |
| Odido | 9.2 | 146.4 | 2026-03[2] |
| Vodafone | 9 | 92.9 | 2026-03[2] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across the Netherlands
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Amsterdam
- The Hague
- Zaanse Schans
- De Hoge Veluwe National Park
Amsterdam
For the city centre, airport links and nearby day trips, it helps to keep a map app ready and check train or tram updates before you move between districts. The Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket is aimed at travel across the wider area, including places such as Zaanse Schans. [5] [7] [18] [19] [22]
The Hague
The Hague is easy to combine with rail travel from Amsterdam and other Dutch cities, so a live journey planner is useful for platform changes and delays. If you are switching between train and local transport, keep data available for the last stretch to your hotel, museum or beach area. [4] [18] [19] [20] [22]
Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans is close enough to Amsterdam for a half-day trip, but it still pays to download maps first in case signal is patchier on the way or near the water and heritage area. A plan for the return train is the most useful thing to keep current. [6] [7] [18] [19] [22]
De Hoge Veluwe National Park
For a park day, expect more dependence on your own preparation than on live connection speed. Save routes, entrances and any tickets before leaving the city, because map access and timetable checks matter more than streaming or messaging at the edge of the trip. [8] [22]

What to know before you choose
The Netherlands has three nationwide mobile network operators: KPN, Odido and Vodafone. Each operator provides its own coverage checker, which is the most practical way to confirm service at the hotel, station, museum, rental car pickup or apartment address you actually need. Independent measurement also shows that coverage and speed are strong overall, but the exact experience still depends on where you are and which network you use.
For travellers, the useful distinction is not just the brand name but the situation: a city-centre walk, a rail journey, a transfer to the coast, or a day trip into a park or heritage area. Amsterdam, The Hague, Zaanse Schans and De Hoge Veluwe each reward a little preparation, especially if you want live train information, offline maps and dependable data for navigation and messaging.
Useful apps and travel tools
NS ↗

9292 ↗

Google Maps ↗
Useful for turn-by-turn navigation, place search and offline map downloads when you want a general-purpose backup. [21] [22]
Before you buy
Check coverage before a train-and-city day
On Dutch rail and tram days, the best preparation is to verify coverage around your hotel, station and the places you plan to change transport. The operators’ own coverage maps are the right place to confirm where 4G or 5G should work, while the NS and 9292 apps help you follow delays and platform changes in real time. [9] [12] [15] [18] [19] [3]
Download maps for outings outside the centre
For places such as Zaanse Schans or De Hoge Veluwe, offline maps are a smart backup because the trip may involve rural segments, parks or moving between transport nodes. Google Maps can store offline areas, and Apple Maps also supports offline maps on iPhone, so you still have navigation if the signal drops. [6] [8] [21] [22]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in the Netherlands
Which mobile networks are available in the Netherlands?
The Dutch regulator identifies three nationwide mobile network operators: KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido. For a traveller, that means you can compare their own coverage tools instead of guessing from a brand name alone. The best choice depends on the places you will actually visit, such as your hotel area, rail corridor, airport transfer or a specific day-trip route. [1] [9] [12] [15]
Can I rely on one operator for both city stays and day trips?
Often yes, but it is wiser to check the exact areas you care about. City centres, station approaches and tourist districts are usually straightforward to test, while a park day or a village visit can benefit from offline maps and a saved route. Use the operator map for the address and use NS or 9292 for live transport updates. [3] [18] [19] [21] [22]
What should I check before going to Zaanse Schans or De Hoge Veluwe?
Before those outings, save your route, your return transport and the ticket or booking you will need. Zaanse Schans is an easy day trip from Amsterdam, and De Hoge Veluwe is a park visit where a connection can matter less than having navigation ready ahead of time. Offline maps are a sensible backup if you want to avoid depending on live data the whole day. [6] [7] [8] [21] [22]
Is the Dutch network good enough for train travel?
For most travellers, yes, but the practical question is whether you have a live planner and enough signal at the moment you need it. NS and 9292 are the most useful apps for trains, platform changes and delays. It is still smart to keep a map downloaded, because the final walk from station to hotel or attraction is where mobile data is often most useful. [3] [18] [19] [20]
Should I choose a plan mainly for speed or for coverage?
Choose for the places you will use it, not just for a headline number. Independent measurement from March 2026 shows that the main Dutch networks are close overall on coverage, while average download speeds differ. For a visitor, that means the location and the route matter more than any single score when you are deciding. [2] [9] [12] [15]
Do I still need offline maps if I have mobile data?
Yes, it is still a good idea. Mobile data is very handy for live transport updates, search and messaging, but offline maps protect you if the signal drops in a building, on a transfer or outside the centre. Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline use, so you can keep navigation available even when coverage is less convenient. [21] [22]
