How far will your data go?
Choose an allowance to see what it could cover. Quality, compression and background activity change actual usage.
With 3 GB, approximately…
Send photos
≈ 600 photosExample: 5 MB per photo
Upload your own videos
≈ 47 clipsExample: a 1-minute Full HD clip ≈ 63 MB
Watch video
≈ 1 hrHD example: 3 GB per hour
At standard quality: ≈ 4 hr 17 min
Make video calls
≈ 2 hr 46 min1:1 at 720p: ≈ 1.08 GB per hour
Each result uses the whole allowance for that one activity. The results do not add up: maps, messages and other apps share the same data.
Taking photos or recording video on your phone does not itself use mobile data. Sending, watching or backing them up over the mobile network does.

Where these estimates come from
Planning examples, not guaranteed totals. We use 1 GB = 1,000 MB, round down complete files and minutes, and exclude overhead, retries and background traffic.
- 5 MB is Verizon’s high-resolution photo example. Your files can be smaller after compression or much larger as originals or RAW. Check the actual file size on your phone. Verizon ↗
- 63 MB models a 1-minute H.264 Full HD export at 24–30 fps using YouTube’s recommended video and stereo audio bitrates. It is not a universal camera-file size or the cost of watching a clip. YouTube ↗
- Viewing examples use Netflix’s published rates: up to 0.7 GB/hr at Medium and up to 3 GB/hr in HD. Other apps and quality settings can differ; these are not YouTube playback rates. Netflix ↗
- The call example uses Zoom’s 1:1 720p bandwidth: 1.2 Mbps up and 1.2 Mbps down, together about 1.08 GB/hr. Group calls and higher resolutions can use more. Zoom ↗

04 / Operators
Mobile operators in Norway
Compare network coverage separately from speed. A national result does not predict reception inside your hotel or along a mountain road.
Nkom identifies the three mobile-network operators with own national networks as Ice, Telenor and Telia. This page points travellers to the operators’ own coverage maps for checking local service.
Telenor
Use Telenor’s public coverage map to check expected service at a specific address or along a route. [1] [2]
Check coverage ↗Telia
Use Telia’s public coverage map to verify practical signal expectations in towns, roads and coastal areas. [1] [3]
Check coverage ↗ice
Use ice’s public map to check where its own network is available; some customers may also use national roaming elsewhere. [1] [4] [5]
Check coverage ↗| Operator | Coverage Experience / 10 | Download · Mbps | Study date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telenor | 8.6 | 126.6 | 2025-11[5] |
| Telia | 8.1 | — | 2025-11[5] |
| ice | 5.9 | — | 2025-11[5] |
Coverage Experience is a score, not a percentage of territory. These dated averages are not promised speeds for your connection.
The network in your chosen package is what matters. This country comparison does not mean every plan includes every operator. 5G depends on the package, phone and local coverage.
05 / Coverage
Coverage across Norway
Check the addresses and roads you will actually use. Save maps and booking details before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Oslo
- Stavanger and the Lysefjord coast
- Hardangervidda plateau
- Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen
Oslo
In the capital, coverage is usually easiest to verify around hotels, rail stations and ferry/piers. If you plan to move between museums, waterfront areas and outer neighborhoods, check the operator map for the exact streets you’ll use and keep the itinerary app ready for transport changes. [6] [12] [1]
Stavanger and the Lysefjord coast
The city center is compact, while fjord excursions and beach drives rely more on route-by-route checking. Confirm coverage before boat trips, scenic drives and day tours, and keep offline maps for the stretch between urban Stavanger and coastal stops. [7] [12] [1]
Hardangervidda plateau
This is a long mountain crossing, so coverage can vary a lot along the road and at trail access points. Check the operator map for the road you’ll actually drive, and download tickets, maps and weather information before leaving the built-up areas. [8] [11] [1]
Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen
For glacier and mountain days, the practical approach is to treat mobile data as something you may use in stages, not continuously. Check maps for access valleys and roadheads, then keep route details saved offline for hikes, ferries and transfers. [9] [10] [1]
Norway · eSIM
Overview
Norway has three mobile-network operators with their own national networks: Telenor, Telia and ice. Nkom points travellers to the operators’ own coverage maps, which is the most practical way to check signal for your exact hotel, road or trail access point.
Opensignal’s latest Norway report gives a useful comparison of experience across operators, but it is still a national snapshot rather than a promise for a specific street, fjord crossing or mountain road. That makes it helpful for broad planning and poor for guessing one exact dead zone. For trips that move between Oslo, Stavanger, the fjord coast and mountain areas, the safest approach is to keep navigation, tickets and key addresses saved before you leave Wi‑Fi.
Useful apps and travel tools
Entur ↗

Vegvesen trafikk ↗

Before you buy
Norway’s mobile networks and what travellers should check
Nkom directs users to the coverage maps for the three operators with their own national networks: Ice, Telenor and Telia. For a traveller, the most useful test is the route you will actually follow, because city centers, roads, fjords and mountain approaches can behave differently from one another. Opensignal’s latest national report also shows that coverage and speed are not the same thing: Telenor led the published coverage and speed results in that report, while Telia and ice scored differently on coverage experience. [1] [5]
Public transport and road updates are worth downloading early
Entur is the national travel planner for Norway and combines routes across train, bus, ferry, tram, metro, flight and even scooters. Statens vegvesen’s traffic app gives alerts for roads, mountain passes, tunnels, webcams and weather-sensitive sections, which is especially useful when your plan includes scenic roads or ferry connections. [12] [11]
06 / FAQ
Questions about eSIM in Norway
Which network should I expect in Norway?
Norway’s own national mobile networks are Telenor, Telia and ice. For a trip, the useful question is not only which brands exist, but which operator map best matches your route. Check the coverage page for the hotel, road or ferry you will actually use, then choose a plan that fits your data needs rather than relying on a general national impression. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Is coverage the same in Oslo, Stavanger and the mountain roads?
No. City centers, coastal routes and mountain crossings can feel very different in practice. Oslo is usually the easiest kind of place to stay connected, while the Stavanger coast and routes such as Hardangervidda or Jotunheimen are better checked segment by segment. Use the operator map and save offline maps before you leave built-up areas. [6] [7] [8] [9] [1]
Can I rely on speed test numbers when choosing a plan?
Speed figures are useful, but they do not tell the whole story. Opensignal’s November 2025 report shows that operators can differ on coverage and download speed, so a fast network result does not automatically mean the best experience everywhere. For travellers, local coverage on the exact route matters more than a single national average. [5]
What is the best way to prepare for fjords and scenic drives?
Download your map, hotel addresses, ferry times and tickets before setting off, because scenic routes may have long stretches where you want your phone to work without delay. Entur is useful for public transport planning, and the NPRA traffic app adds road, tunnel, mountain-pass and weather information. [12] [11] [8] [7]
Do I need a special app for Norway?
You do not need a special app just for the eSIM itself, but two official apps are especially practical: Entur for public transport and Vegvesen trafikk for road conditions. They help when you move between cities, ferries and mountain roads and need quick updates without searching multiple websites. [12] [11]
